Where is the large format?

Post by wheresthelargeformat »

As the topic and my user name say, where is the large format in the dropdown menu? I mean, why is there an option for small, medium, and HD format of the video, but not for the large one? Though I can find it in the DASH (separate audio and video tracks) submenu, that doesn't help much.

C'mon! Don't you like the large one too? It can make videos look better, and doesn't have fancy uppercase alphanumeric name like HD720 or 4K.

URLs?
Are there in fact "large" format?
If it is in fact in Dash, what is wrong with that?
If it is in Dash, does that mean that there is necessarily a corresponding non-Dash variety of the same clip?

Better?
You've actually compared "large" against "medium" can are able to see a meaningful difference?

I suspect whatever is picked up as "default" is based on what is actually playing at a particular time?
So maybe it needs to be asked why that particular site is only serving you "medium" or "small" rather then "large".

I downloaded all the videos of Top chess players (Carlsen, Nakamura...) made terrible touch-move mistakes (part 1) presented in the "Available formats" submenu and the result is this:
- small format has two .3GP files with videos of 144 and 180 pixels respectively
- medium has .WEBM and .MP4 files of 360 pixels
- HD has a .MP4 file of 720 pixels

The large version of the video, which can be found only in the DASH submenu, is 480 pixels high, but doesn't have the sound embedded. So, as I said before, that doesn't help much.

This result makes me think that FlashGot skips the 480 format, which is available for sure in the YouTube player if the HD format is available. Also, some movies are available in 1080, 1440 or 2160 (4K), and these formats aren't available in the "Available formats" submenu. Like "Star Wars vs Raffael ★ Classic Online Chess Blitz Matchups ★ November 10 2004" (its link, for some reason, triggers an antispam filter. Here it is watch?v=3 N F 2 R N M p n X M without spaces)

Now to answer your "questions":
Are there in fact "large" format?
Yep!
If it is in fact in Dash, what is wrong with that?
As the name of the submenu says, those are separated links for video and audio portion of the movie.
If it is in Dash, does that mean that there is necessarily a corresponding non-Dash variety of the same clip?
Now you are being naughty. That is a question I should get an answer for, not vice-versa. But what do ya think?
Better?

Medium has a height of 360 pixels, large has a height of 480 pixels (at least in the YouTube system of reference).
I suspect whatever is picked up as "default" is based on what is actually playing at a particular time?
Doesn't matter, because those three formats are available all the time, regardless of the default quality or the quality of the movie currently playing.

Seriously? How could the guy possibly know the answer when you hadn't yet linked the site in question?

You're not seeing what you want because it doesn't exist. Youtube simply does not offer that resolution without DASH.

We Mods are just volunteers who cannot do anything to change that. Lose the attitude now.

If he doesn't know the answer then why is he answering? Srsly!

I really don't care. Wait! What? We Mods!? Sorry to ruin your net immortality, but you are only common nouns.
Lose the attitude now.
Do you mean "Lose the attitude now!"? BTW, what attitude? That "Mod" quoted me ("large") implying that I didn't know what I was asking for, so the attitude is his.

To say what more information is needed to figure out the answer. It's pretty routine to do that. No one can be expected to necessarily know, from the very start, what all details are and will be needed.
wheresthelargeformat wrote:Do you mean "Lose the attitude now!"?
No. Unlike some people, I don't need exclamation marks to make myself clear.
wheresthelargeformat wrote:That "Mod" quoted me ("large") implying
... nothing. That's just how he writes.

I think you will find that taking every little thing personally is not a good idea on this forum. ;)

So, if I'm reading correctly...

3gp, you don't want that period. (Well, maybe for special situations...)

Non-Dash:
-mp4, you can get medium or hd720
-webm, you can get medium (which is VP8 rather then a preferred VP9)

So, I'm not seeing a non-Dash "Large" at all.
Medium in both mp4 & webm.
hd720 only in mp4.

Dash:
Dash certainly gives you more options, in both & corresponding mp4/webm formats.

Formats offered on particular clips can change.
Can change over time.
Quality too can change, over time.
Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
