New Norton Security Vault and Firefox

Post by Paul T »

After waiting a year for Norton to get Norton Security Vault to work again in Firefox, I believe that NoScript is blocking my ability to use the add-on. The add-on is available here https://community.norton.com/en/forums/ ... ox-browser. I have tried creating a bookmark to the vault log in screen, and telling NoScript to "allow sites opened by bookmarks" and various other things that doesn't seem to work. I am not comfortable messing with the protections NoScript gives me as a long time user. However if I disable NoScript and when I restart the browser and use the bookmark created to log into the vault it works fine. While try to fix this myself on this forum I found out how to launch the console it clearly says that the id safe script is being blocked. I will forward any other information to help if requested. Thank you in advance. Btw here is a copy of the shortcut i created moz-extension://142b5c6c-cdda-47a4-9d6a-0fd06f***acd/content/ui/vault-unlock.html. I changed letters with *** to post the shortcut in case there may be personally identifiable to post here, but someone looking at it may see clearly whats going on. Thank You in advance.

Do you know the URL of the vault? What shows up on the NoScript menu when you visit it?

And have you enabled cascading permissions? That's been known to break internal pages before.

Thank you Thrawn for replying, as I stated in my original post I create a bookmark and tried to tell NoScript to allow from bookmarks. The bookmark is moz-extension://142b5c6c-cdda-47a4-9d6a-0fd06f069acd/content/ui/vault-unlock.html The page comes up blank, just like the Norton Vault Icon that opens a small window to sign into. It comes out as a blank window. I do know the Firefox version is 48.0.2 and I surf in incognito mode with ad block plus. I looked for the entry to enable cascading permissions and can not locate that setting. I would appreciate any additional assistance.

When this issue occurs, do you see anything related in the Browser Console? (Ctrl-Shift-J)
(if you don't know what's related, turn off CSS warnings and post everything else you see)

Re: New Norton Security Vault and Firefox

Post by Thrawn »

Just from briefly looking through, it appears that the Norton extension doesn't work well with others. I'm guessing that both NoScript and Norton are overriding the same section of code, in a way that doesn't allow both to function.

Theoretically it could be NoScript misbehaving here, but generally it does try to coexist peacefully with other extensions, whereas the Norton extension is new(ish) and doesn't necessarily care...

As a test, does it work with Scripts Globally Allowed in NoScript?

Thank you Barbaz and Thrawn for the ongoing support. Enabling scripts globally does not help me either by attempting to launch via bookmark or Firefox toolbar. Yes the add-on from Norton for the vault is a new extension. Vault stopped working over a year ago when Firefox released version 40, they apparently made major changes that affected extensions, and it has taken Symantec a year to produce something that is compatible and should not break in Firefox in the future. This is a early release of the add-on that I downloaded directly from them, I realize there are alot of additional Firefox,Noscript, ad block plus with Norton Vault users out there, and when norton updates vault through live update, there will be others in my situation. Under normal operation NoScript off) when I click on the toolbar icon for vault a little window opens and I then click sign in button, Firefox then temporarily opens an additional tab moz-extension://142b5c6c-cdda-47a4-9d6a-0fd06f069acd/content/ui/vault-unlock.html (the same url I supplied to you above). I then log in and the temporary tab then closes itself after successful sign in. As I have stated before I am weary to go haphazardly messing with NoScript and loose the protection and assurance it gives me.I also do not want to shut NoScript off except for testing, the time it took Symantec to release this add-on I was forced to use Chrome and Internet Explorer without NoSrcipt protection. I am and will be continuing to report back my results as we go and willing to try anything suggested.

Note that the moz-extension scheme is on the mandatory whitelist exactly because it's required for WebExtensions to function at all. There are some more things we can try with NoScript, but first things first. WebExtensions is really new, are you able to check with a pre-release Firefox, Firefox Developer Edition? Just answer yes or no, do not actually download or run it yet as there is a risk of profile data loss if things aren't done precisely.

Yes I would be willing to download and install it. A couple things I feel I should mention:
1) Norton is labeling this add-on as a pre- release,
2) I am also going between here and Norton Forum forum https://community.norton.com/forums/nor ... ntity-safe
3) I have keep Norton security updated multiple times a day
4) before posting here I did a browser refresh and backed up my Firefox profile 5) I am an advanced user reg edit, msconfig etc, will ask questions if I don't understand.

Great, you've already done step 1 of setting up to use a pre-release Firefox. Make sure you have that profile backup on hand as you'll need it. Next step is to install Fx Dev Edition to a different location than your existing Firefox, being careful not to overwrite anything from your existing Firefox. If it doesn't let you do that, uninstall your existing Firefox first, select to *keep* your personal data.

Now we need to create a copy of your profile for use exclusively with Dev Edition, as migrating back to a stable Firefox on the same profile may not be possible. So, start up Dev Edition in the Profile Manager, create a new profile - give it a unique name and leave the default folder location. Exit the profile manager.
Locate the profile folders in your OS file manager, delete the contents of the newly-created Dev Edition profile, and copy in the entire contents of your profile backup. Restart Dev Edition in the profile manager, make sure the Dev Edition specific profile is selected, and then click to start up Dev Edition.

Is the situation w/ Norton & NoScript any different there?
If not, re-test in a new, clean profile containing only Norton and NoScript, does that work correctly?

Your link just goes to the topics listing, and I don't see anything obviously related offhand. If you're posting in a thread there, can you please post here the exact link to the thread?

Barbaz, I had an interesting test session with Firefox Dev 50.0.0a2.
1) I started out after doing as you requested with the profiles, NoScript , Ad Block plus and Norton vault worked with no issues (allow norton.com,nortoncdn.com in whitelist) As I have in Firefox 48.0.2.

2) I then configured Firefox Dev 50.0.0a2 to my normal browsing settings Norton Vault then stopped working and would only run if NoScript was off, like Firefox 48.0.2.

3) Going back through the options I found in Privacy I had to disable "always use Private browsing mode" and I was able to "accept 3rd party" cookies and "clear Firefox history when closing".

4) Turned NoScript back on and did a NoScript reset and every thing works, after adding the two sites to the whitelist.

5) Ran Mozilla pluin check on both browsers and they were Identical.

6) I then went to Firefox 48.0.2 and made the same Privacy settings, and Norton Vault is still broken unless NoScript is disabled.

7) I continued testing Firefox Dev 50.0.0a2 after the privacy changes, including hibernating the laptop, browser closed or open, restarting the laptop, all while running Piriform CCleaner, multiple times to make sure there was no browser cache in either browser. Firefox Dev 50.0.0a2 and all 3 add-ons worked perfectly!

I will be using Firefox Dev 50.0.0a2 for Norton vault and am more than willing to assist, if you may want comparative console information or anything else. I find it odd that a privacy setting and a add-on can have the same result, I really hope we can figure out something permanent before Norton released vault through live update to all the other Firefox users.

Just to be clear, did you do this by completely quitting Firefox then copying in your entire profile backup, or did you do it manually?

If the latter, you might be suffering a glitch in your Fx 48 profile...

Barbaz, sorry for the delay getting back. I was copying profiles correctly. However in reviewing how I was trying my testing, I realized that I missed unchecking "use selected profile without asking." So my testing was useless as when I was going between the two browsers, I now realize the same profile was being used common. I have since restarted testing after I copied both ff 48 and ff50 profiles that I had made copies back into the profiles and then doing browser refreshes on both. Two Items are giving me issues at this time, it appears that frequently when I go back to Firefox 48 from dev I will see new profiles appear. The other issue that I believe is occurring is an issue on Symantec's end is issues with the two step vault verification they have set the program up with has been inconsistent in allowing me to sign in. The sign in pages sit there and spin doing nothing with all add-ons disabled on both browserI will report back with more information. I appreciate your assistance.

Actually I think your mistake has given you your answer. Firefox 48 just isn't ready to handle that WebExtension, but Firefox 50 could be.
My recommendation now would be to just use Firefox 50 and follow it through to release (meaning, update it to 50 beta instead of 51 Dev, and so on). Or try 49 beta and see if it works there, and if so follow that one to release.
