1.9.6 annoyance

I am still on Firefox 3.0.11 and I am using Popupsound to indicate when my mouse click has been registered. I installed NoScript 1.9.6.9 today and whenever I click on a link in Bookmarks there is a double Popupsound. At first, I assumed that my mouse wasn't working correctly, but eventually discovered that 1.9.6.9 was causing it. It also occurs with some links on webpages, but not all links.

I have reverted to 1.9.5 and things are back to normal.

I've read recent posts to see if this has been reported already but I'm not technically minded so it may already have been raised in a different form.

I installed https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/634 - hope that's the same one, in a clean profile with NS latest development version as the only other extension. The latest development version is used because that's how the developer's workflow happens.
These are the steps I took:

• Left default options in PUS
  Reset NS to defaults
  Heard a single alert tone every time Fx changed addresses.

Heard no tone for mouse click only, and couldn't find a preference for that alone, the one nearest it is "website link clicked event". The tone played once only at each page change, whether initiated by mouse or other navigation methods such as keyboard shortcuts and the navigation buttons on the toolbar. Could you be hearing double tones because your browser is being redirected to a second page by the first - as in this example:
I go to google.com, and because I'm in Australia, google.com redirects me to google.com.au straight away, and I hear 2 tones. This is what I would expect.

I can confirm the double tone on bookmark selection with the mouse/trackpad, but only a single tone when I navigate with the keyboard - something to do with how NS is handling bookmark exceptions maybe?
We'll find out I guess.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that is the add-on that I use and "website link clicked event" is the action for which I have configured the sound.

Because my Internet is very slow, I need confirmation that my mouse click has been accepted to save waiting a long time before repeating it.

The double tone occurs on every link from the bookmarks, with most links on webpages producing just a single tone, but that is not true of every website link as some are also producing a double tone. It doesn't appear that I'm being redirected because running with 1.9.5 installed doesn't produce the double tones.

Thanks for the info on 3.0.12 I shall make enquiries. I have held back from upgrading to 3.5 for a while until I learn that they have fixed their start-up delay problem.

I'm not technically minded enough to try to troubleshoot this, but thanks for the info on how to proceed if I wanted to. It's just an annoying thing to keep hearing the double tone.

Oh I think we should persist with finding the problem; it could be an indication of other problems that could affect other extensions as well as yours.

The troubleshooting guide is not so hard to follow if you're not technical - I know, because I had to find out how to do it on my own, and I'm not a coder - just a long-time Fx user. They are the steps a user has to take to eliminate any other fault before the developer can look at a NS fault - hey you don't have to do anything really technical, I promise.

In the meantime, before you have to worry about that, you say you are getting the double tone when you use the mouse on links that aren't bookmarks.
Can you return with specific urls for us to test?
And it is important for you to get the latest development version - because the developer has to be able to compare between exactly the same versions when he's tracking down bugs.

It won't break your main NS functions, it just has the incremental changes from reports of bugs (just like yours!) that the developer saves up for a few versions before he puts a new update on the official site.

I installed the development version from the link as requested.

I found that clicking on a bookmark link would produce the double tone (as expected) but clicking on the same bookmark link again will only produce a single tone. I assumed it's because I already have the page in my cache.

However, I found that if I have 2 bookmarks, each pointing to the same website, but to a different page in that website the same thing happens.

Example: I have 2 bookmarks to the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

If I click on the first link I get 2 tones, if I then click on the second link I get one tone (even though the 2nd page is not in my cache)

Exactly the same thing happens with certain links on webpages. An example of this that I found was with Ancestry.co.uk. I went to the page

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectyp ... fault.aspx

I then scrolled down to the section "Search a Specific UK Census by Year" and I clicked on the link "1871 England Census" and there were 2 tones. When I repated the actions there was only 1 tone.

In addition to all of this, I clicked on the bookmark to the Guardian newspaper at http://www.guardian.co.uk/ and got 3 tones.

That's some excellent exampling (is that a proper verb I wonder).
I shall go now and see if I can reproduce your examples on a clean profile and then probably try to draw the power users in here's attention to the bug. They will have plenty of ideas.
Patience is the word now :-)

And the time I spend here is just to be part of the Fx community. You give and you get, I always reckon. You took the time too, didn't you? :-)

A follow-up to my previous post. I get a double tone when clicking on most links in Google. I use Google.uk but it's probably the same on other Googles.

I entered "Dictionary" in the search box, and the first link was to Dictionary.com, this produced 1 tone. The second link was to "Cambridge Dictionaries Online - Cambridge University Press" and this produced 2 tones (but only 1 on subsequent repeats). Proceeding down the links , the majority were 2 tones and some were 1 tone. Now, I realise that I am being redirected to another website for each link, but this never happened on 1.9.5

I think I might have chosen a couple of my bookmarks that did have more than one link loading for the initial test of your bug. Now I can't seem to reproduce it except for those that I am sure are doing more than a single link load.
The genealogy link is behaving correctly too, in the sense that it redirects you at the first visit to the application form-filling site (which is away from ancestry.com) and then on your next visit in the same session you're redirected straight there(via cookie, I would say).

And the redirects and extra sites loading are mostly expected normal web behaviour - redirecting isn't always just done by nasties.

Your findings are supporting the idea that the extension is actually reporting weblink selecting behaviour correctly ;-( and that the previous NS wasn't allowing it to do its job perhaps?
I'll grab a copy of 1.9.5 and see if it changes behaviour for my connection. If it does, then I think it's time to ask the big boys for some help.

I should also have asked whether you've checked with PUS developers for whether they can help - - they know their application after all :-)

If I'm not back within half an hour, it means that the family's arrived for dinner and because I'm the cook, I'll have to continue a few hours later :-)

Restart, clear all private data.
1.9.6.92, only a single tone.

I installed 1.9.5.1 and got zero multiple effects. It was consistently a single tone for only the first link initiated, whether mouse or browser.

Is the system difference muddying the problem here I wonder.

Must look after the food now, I might investigate Win system sounds after that - there might be a configuration there that you could try while NS is undergoing such rapid development?

Back again - only briefly because the family need the bandwidth to watch the Tour de Lance ;-)

The same extra sounds are happening in this XP system Fx 3.5.1, so upgrading won't get you out of it easily by the looks of it.
I did a little rummaging and found another more comprehensive extension which throws a lot fewer double sounds with one particular configuration, than PUS.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8438 (scanned at jotti.org and no malware results, I didn't have time to read the extensions research stuff so I always scan such stuff just in case )
Choose Options and check Change Location (not Navigation, which delivers more multiple sounds in my setup) and see if that's any improvement for the meanwhile.

Fix confirmed with 1.9.6.93 for all the links I tested, also in Shiretoko 3.5.1 on here, and in 3.5.1 on the XP machine.
