blacklist and permissions, strangeness

Post by ihatetrackers »

High strangeness here. Sure could use some thoughts.

I was running Mint Linux 17.2 and having real problems with cloudflare blockages for awhile. I started seeing "cloudflare" scripts show up in the no-script list about the time I started have intermittent network disconnects. I tried to put these scripts on the blacklist but I'm concerned that these scripts will gain entry when I "allow all scripts on a page". Do the order-of-operations allow blacklisted scripts thru when all scripts are allowed on a page? I sure wish No-script had a absolute blacklist entry screen identical to the format of the whitelist entry screen. It would be nice if the blacklist screen had an option checkbox to "allow entry to execute if all scripts on page allowed". I find the current blacklist procedure to be confusing. Maybe I'm just being dense.

Anyway, I got so aggravated with the periodic network disconnects, I wiped the disk and installed Mint Linux 17.3. I'm still getting intermittent network disconnects but I have not seen cloudflare scripts yet. Does this sound like the network problems are related to scripts, other malicious scripts or just a hardware problem?

BTW, in the news right now, the German govt is talking about using trojans to track users.....

The "absolute blacklist" you're looking for is the Untrusted feature:
NoScript menu > Untrusted > Mark [site] as Untrusted

If you don't see that, you'll need to check Untrusted in NoScript Options > Appearance

(But you read the news, I guess you're probably already aware of that.)

Can you please clarify whether it's "cloudflare" or "cloudfront"? I've seen confusion of that in the past.
- If it's Cloudflare, most likely you're visiting Cloudflare-enabled sites (example) and either they're just including stuff from Cloudflare's site or you (or the site) are actually having network issues. This case probably is not malicious.
- If it's Cloudfront, more information is needed as that doesn't tell us anything. Please post the full URL to one of these scripts (link broken or in code tags please - otherwise the board will make live links to something potentially suspicious).

Yes; I have that enabled

I installed the 17.2 about 3 months ago. It had just started the intermittent network disconnects about a month ago. The network disconnect only last about 4 or 5 seconds but it hoses my VPN and takes a minute or more to reset. I picked up the 17.3 torrent the day after Mint cleaned up the mess.

It's Cloudflare that was giving me the problems .... on cloudflare protected sites ...... like ancient-origins.com. I don't know how I would locate the url to the cloudflare scripts. The last time I was blocked by cloudflare was February 14. The only residual problem left, if it's related, is the network dropouts. I don't have enough computer savy to figure out what's going on. Maybe I need to substitute another NIC or machine on this connection and see if that fixes the problem.

This machine is locked down pretty tightly with various plugins like ghostery, adblock, etc.

OK back up here. First things first, how have you determined that your VPN has no role in this problem?

Been using this same VPN for years. Never had an issue with them or their Linux client. Maybe I should contact their tech support to be sure?

When the ethernet network connection breaks, the network icon in the tool bar reflects the broken connection. The ethernet connection re-establishes after ~ 4 or 5 seconds. The VPN is set to disconnect on broken connections as a safety measure and it must sense the short ethernet break because the VPN will break connection and then re-establish. Total time out with the web unavailable is a minute or more.

Any thoughts? Sure appreciate any insight.

(I have zero experience with VPNs, so if I say something wrong or dumb, please don't hesitate to let me know.)

The network icon change to "Ethernet cable unplugged" or "Limited connection"?
Assuming the former, see if you can deliberately reproduce the problem by playing with your network cables (both ends and the middle) - the most likely cause is that one connection is loose. That was the case for me once, when I was using a wired connection in a different room from the router, every time the temperature outside got within a certain range.. and it took YEARS to figure out that the problem was a loose connection on the end of my cable plugged in the router. Replaced that cable and no glitching on that connection since.
(I don't know if it'd show as connection unplugged for a glitch on the VPN's side?)

If it's the "Limited connection" icon, or if you can't deliberately trigger the problem by messing with cables, then yes contacting the tech support for your VPN is definitely the best course of action. (I'm not necessarily saying the issue is definitely on their end. But they will be able to tell you for sure whose end the issue lies, and give you better advice than me.)
