Noscript causing FF running Java to slow down

Post by zog »

Hi
I use Noscript all the time and it is the first addon I always install on Firefox. However, I am using it at work and recently (possibly since November?) I have been having problems when running a Java application. We have standalone Java apps and these run without issues on the desktop but this particular application only runs on Java in a browser. Not only that but it will only now run in Firefox as Chrome blocks it and it's not IE compatible (for some unknown reason).
I started to find that the browser and app would keep hanging up and causing Firefox 'script' timeout messages when running this app and, by disabling addons one by one, I eventually found that this only happened when Noscript was loaded. Note that the website (It's an internal one) is completely whitelisted in NoScript and that it used to work without problems (Java is also unblocked completely in Firefox). The application and it's server have not been changed at all in the last 2 years (I know as I manage it) so this implies something with either Firefox or NoScript has changed causing the problem - and, as it works fine without Noscript loaded, this seems to rule out Firefox generally (although it could be some interaction between Firefox and Noscript?).

The App runs in Java 6 and this is not optional (I know it's old but the app is not compatible with Java 8 which is our only other option).

Are there any ideas what the problem might be or what I can do to fix it please? At the moment I have to restart Firefox in safe mode to run the app, which is a real pain, especially as it takes several hours to run the process which leaves me without a safe browser.

Thanks for your help!

(Does the "app" not run properly under appletviewer?)

Did it previously work fine with NoScript? If so, do you remember which NS version?

In the meanwhile you might work-around the issue by using a separate profile exclusively for Java & this app:
open a Command prompt, cd to the Firefox installation directory, then run

Code: Select all

firefox.exe -profilemanager
Click the button to create new profile, go through the wizard (make sure to leave the default folder location to what Firefox chooses!)

Run Firefox with the new profile like:

Code: Select all

firefox.exe -no-remote -new-instance -P <profilename>
replacing <profilename> with the name you gave your profile. Do not run this new profile without those command-line options.

Thanks - Not come across appletviewer before - I'll see if I can try it out.
Unfortunately I am using a locked down corporate desktop and it doesn't have JDK installed so it may not be possible.

I don't know which version of FF or NS was in use as I don't run the app too often, and it was a long time before I tracked it down to FF/NS (I initially assumed that something had been 'upgraded' on my desktop).

You might have appletviewer anyway - I use Java 6 as well and I seem to have appletviewer on some machines where I definitely didn't install JDK... but then again, I don't use Windows so maybe it's different there.

No, it's not there.
I'm trying to get it from the JDK package but I can't install it so I'm trying to extract it from the installer which is proving to be problematic...

When it breaks, is there anything NoScript-related in the Browser Console (Ctrl+Shift+J)?

Have you tried a dedicated profile, as barbaz suggested? It might be a good idea anyway.
