Cannot whitelist new sites
Newscript will not allow me to permanently whitelist my email's website. I may successfully whitelist the site, but then it is reblacklisted after I close the browser. When the program was new to to me, I was able to whitelist sites. I am using Ubuntu 15.10, Firefox.

Hmm, this sounds very similar to your other thread viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21306 ... wonder if I should be merging...
In any event unless you say otherwise I'll assume you've already tried all that and none of it works for you in this case either.
I've had (and heard of) the weirdest issues specific to distribution builds of Firefox before.
Can you please download the official Mozilla build of Firefox and the standalone profile manager, use the latter to create a new profile (which you will use *only* with the official Mozilla build), start the official Mozilla build of Firefox with the new profile then install NoScript, and see if the problem persists there?
(If it doesn't show up initially, please export your entire NoScript config from the distribution build profile using the NoScript's own export functionality, and then import that into the NoScript install in the official build profile.)

Re: Cannot whitelist new sites
This is a new issue, that is why I made a new post for it. I checked the firefox "build" website you linked me to, and it is merely the same as their normal Firefox versions. I don't know why you call it a "build" as that implies it is an incremental code stack from their normal versions. I had already reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Linux and Firefox, before posting this issue, so there was no need to download a 2nd version of it.
Your instruction to download a standalone profile program was puzzling, as Firefox already has one installed. I created a new profile, tested noscript on it, and received the same result -- I cannot add new websites to the whitelist of NoScript.
Please keep something in mind, most users on the internet are novices, and need instructions with more detail.
Thank you for attempting to help me.

Nope, the term "build" just means that it's compiled, packaged, or otherwise different from (but directly constructed from) the source form.Brutal_Moose wrote:I don't know why you call it a "build" as that implies it is an incremental code stack from their normal versions.
The Firefox you installed with Linux is the Ubuntu distribution build, which in my experience is so different from the official Mozilla build that a profile generated in the official Mozilla build is not compatible with the Ubuntu distro build; that incompatibility will manifest itself in the weirdest ways.Brutal_Moose wrote:I had already reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Linux and Firefox, before posting this issue,
Sorry, at the time I made that post I was under the false impression that Firefox was imminently going to remove the built-in profile manager in favor of that standalone program.Brutal_Moose wrote:Your instruction to download a standalone profile program was puzzling, as Firefox already has one installed.
Better instructions and more detailed information than I can reasonably give, is all included in the link about profiles. Please keep something in mind, I have been helping users here for years, and as such I have a pretty good sense of the level of most users who come here.Brutal_Moose wrote:Please keep something in mind, most users on the internet are novices, and need instructions with more detail.
If you can be specific what you'd like explained more, feel free to ask and we'll try to give more details or clarify.

Which is?
If you modify a Pref other then noscript related, does that persist a browser restart?
Do you have a user.js file in your Profile directory?
Are you using Private Browsing?

My reply says that I am a novice, you ignore this and give me a bunch of sentences a novice cannot understand. Furthermore, in your first sentence, you have a grammatical error (then, should be than), and you use abbreviations that a novice does not know. I am not using Private Browsing Mode, I don't know how that mode works. I have gained nothing from your reply.

Re: Cannot whitelist new sites
Thank you for your well written reply, Barbaz. Your rebuttal that you know most of the NoScript users are not novices only reinforces that some of the NoScript users are novices, and should not be assumed to know what you think they should know.
I followed your first advice, Barbaz. What is the next step I should take to fix this whitelisting issue?

Re: Cannot whitelist new sites
@Moose: You stated that you "reinstalled Linux and Firefox"; was that using the package manager (eg the Ubuntu Software Center), or did you go to the Mozilla website and download it from there?
It's very strange that a new profile would have the same issue. I can't reproduce it here; my temporary and permanent whitelists are working fine.

Well, that feeling is mutual. We're volunteers; we've been paid nothing to help you. We just want to help.I have gained nothing from your reply.

You're welcome.Brutal_Moose wrote:Thank you for your well written reply, Barbaz.
I assume you mean the advice to try the official build of Firefox. Did it behave any differently?Brutal_Moose wrote:I followed your first advice, Barbaz. What is the next step I should take to fix this whitelisting issue?
If it did, then the solution is to use that instead of the Ubuntu package version.
If it didn't, then we need to make a diagnostic test. In the Firefox you prefer to use, type about:config in the address bar, click the button that says you will be careful, then right-click > New > String
For name, enter extensions.footesting.doesitwork
It doesn't matter what you put in for value
Now perform the steps that cause new NoScript whitelist entries to be deleted. Is the "extensions.footesting.doesitwork" entry still listed in about:config?
If it is: go back to the about:config listing as above, and just right-click that about:config entry and choose Reset (this deletes it even though it will be shown as empty default string).
If not: please open a Terminal in your Firefox profile folder, and post here the output of running
Code: Select all
ls -laLet us know, thanks - and again, feel free to ask for clarification on any of that you don't understand or that has imperfect grammar.
