Youtube + flash

Post by klavspe »

I've been running noscript + firefox for a long time.

When I do a clean install of my OS and utils, I disallow youtube.com and flash. So when I open my browser and visit youtube to watch a video I have to do the follwoing:

1) Temporarily allow youtube.com

And when this is done

2) Click on the flash element and temporarily 'Activate Adobe Flash'

Usually when I temporarily allow youtube and before I allow the flash element, the flash element is disabled immediately. But now it loads the element (and displayes the duration and the movie navigation slider, then it 'hour glasses' for a while, and then it shows the faimilar 'Activate Adobe Flash' on the flash element. This takes from 30 seconds to a minute, which is very annoying, especially when I was used to it displaying 'Activate Adobe Flash' immediately.

Does anyone know what has happened, how to make noscript work the way it used to work?

Change on YouTube's end? Perhaps they try to show the HTML5 version of the player, can't, then fall back to the Flash version?

Under the name "klavsp"? You seem "here"...

If you do not receive an activation email within 24 hours post back here and I will PM Giorgio. (We Mods can't do much with accounts on this board.)

Once you get your account going I can put your OP under your account if you want.

Thank you.

It seems youtube changed something. I now have to allow googlevideo.com too, then the video displays immediately.

Wrt to the forum registration, I made the forum re-send me the confirmation link, and it worked the 2nd time. You don't have to change anything wrt to the username of my 2 posts in this thread, unless you really want to.

Er.. isn't googlevideo.com in the default whitelist now?
Did you remove it?

OK glad that's resolved.

I'll leave the posts as-is since it doesn't matter to you.

It is.
But... AFAIK, there is no retroactive change to a persons whilelist?
An update to the defaulted whitelist only being effected... perhaps on a Reset (& not on a NoScript version update)?
(I assume that about:*, & others like that, are handled differently & are updated with a NoScript version update.)

So if you were a long time user, prior to when googlevideo.com had been defaulted, & you had not manually Allowed googlevideo, or if you have not done a Reset, then it would not be in your whitelist. So in that respect, there need not have been a removal for it not to be there.

Hmm.
And now I'm confused.
Because what I see & what I said & what I said & what I see are not agreeing...?

I certainly do not have googlevideo.com, but I do have mediasource:.
And I know there are other sites that are new defaulted, that I do not have, & that I had not "manually" allowed/disallowed in any manner.

They started from a clean install of NoScript... so googlevideo.com should be there...

Yes, the "forced" whitelist is updated independently, so it's no surprise you got mediasource: .
NoScript does have the ability to change the whitelist of users with a non-default whitelist, unless the user opted out in about:config. In practice though it's only used if the user chose to keep a site in the default whitelist that since has new dependencies or changed (e.g. googleapis was added for those who trusted Google, and browserid.org was replaced with persona.org).
