NoScript icon oddity - simplest-image-hosting.net

Post by therube »

NoScript icon oddity.

URL: http://simplest-image-hosting.net/jpg-0-snap000060

Allow simplest-image-hosting.net

At that point the Icon then shows that something more should be able to be Allowed, but there isn't.

JSView reacts similarly.
Initially grayed out, but then once simplest-image-hosting.net is Allowed, it too "lights up", but sees nothing.

I get statcounter.com in my Untrusted menu (and as the only script in my JSView menu)...
(same in both SeaMonkey 2.32 and my self built SeaMonkey from comm-esr31)
*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

I get statcounter.com
Sure enough, it is statcounter.com that is missing.

Turns out that it is my "ad blocker", Bluhell Firewall that causes this oddity.

It must be blocking statcounter.com, so while Bluhell is enabled, NoScript "senses" that something more is there, but does not actually display the domain name, while at the same time the NoScript icon displays that there should be more.

And understanding this, when this oddity occurs, & when a site doesn't work, it gives you a good place to start looking.

Affected similarly Missing map on NOAA weather site.

It is this "addthis.com" domain that is needed, & again, seemingly Bluhell Firewall blocks that.

Also oddly with weather.gov, with nothing allowed, addthis.com, does show [NoScript icon] as a displayed domain, but once weather.gov is Allowed, addthis.com drops from the [NoScript icon] list, never to appear again.

Further if you Allow both weather.gov & addthis.com, initially, & then go back & Allow all further domains (or even Allow Globally), while Bluhell is enabled, still the map fails to load.

(Don't know if Adblock Plus or similar would also cause this issue?)

(With simplest-image-hosting.net & BluHell enabled) if you have the (NoScript) Notification Bar enabled is does report the correct number of scripts - showing 1/2 - even though the NoScript icon only shows 1 domain.

(And I guess weather.gov is similar only you've got to throw in the initially displaying, but then vanishing, addthis.com domain.)

(Was there some recent thread about script count being "off"?)

@therube,
Having experienced similar difficulties getting sites to work with NS permissions toggles - esp with image loading routines, which I guess has much to do with tracking pixels getting loaded - after toggling Bluhell Firewall, I did a prelim request for debugging with the Bluhell Firewall dev at their gmail addy.
Still waiting for some response.
I do note that none of the Bluhell Firewall reviewers mentions NS compatibility yet, so I've put Bluhell Firewall on the backburner for now. Maybe it's beyond the dev's field of view to work this out yet. Their debugging in the review responses consists of WFM.
I also note that some few reviewers have mentioned css troubles. Maybe linked to how it works with scripts? Don't know.
It's main value here was to warn about linking out to shonky sites, but with all this bugginess in getting on with NS I'll go back to middle clicking for the NS site service.

I think it's still very much beta and is likely the kind of extension that would more likely be useful for people who don't travel much outside the very popular sites.
