NoScript becoming too difficult to use effectively
NoScript becoming too difficult to use effectively
I've been a thankful and appreciative NoScript user on Firefox for a long time but feel it is getting too difficult to use effectively. I decided to post this in forum realizing that maybe it's just me now not knowing how to use the tool correctly in the current browser environment. In the past it wasn't too difficult to figure out what scripts to enable after some trial and error, research, etc. and be on your way. However now what I see is that I enable a couple of initial scripts for a web site and next thing you know a whole bunch of more scripts need to be evaluated and enabled for sites to work correctly. The worst part about it is that it is obvious the sites have relationships with all these other sites, networks, clouds, etc. who are creating script engines to run on their page for content and you can't tell which ones are needed or not based on names. It's just getting too ridiculous and time consuming to figure out who is friend or foe. So it seems to me there needs to be some kind of updated safe list plugin that needs to be built and loaded to help out with this. I understand it could be up to all us users to help build such a list but I don't want to just start allowing all scripts like other people I know that tell me about all the problems they have because of doing that. I frankly don't tell most people about NoScript because I know most of them won't have the tolerance to deal with trying to figure out good and bad scripts to enable. Thanks for the tool and your comments/help.

Re: NoScript becoming too difficult to use effectively
Here's how I deal with that:
1) Install Adblock Plus (personally, I use my own fork of ABP)
2) Add subscriptions which blocking things you don't want: https://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions
(If you add the EasyPrivacy subscription, you should be aware of viewtopic.php?f=19&t=20201 )
Now, when you aren't sure about a site, just search for it in the ABP filter preferences dialog. I've posted more details about how to do that at viewtopic.php?p=71872#p71872
Note: Last time I checked this procedure will still work if you go to ABP menu > Disable everywhere, so you should be able to set up ABP to not doing anything other than having the subscriptions easily available for you.
Hope that helps

*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!
