YouTube: Inconsistent WEBM downloads (Medium only)

Post by intheflesh »

Example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXX4alAEzF4

When I try to download the large WEBM I get a video like this:

Image

Medium is OK (but not always!; sometimes like above; inconsistent)

Firefox setup: latest, with factory settings, only FlashGot is added.

By the way, I am not sure if I should prefer the WEBM or MP4 or whatever downloads if I can choose?

Downloaded Large WEBM.

Would not play in MPLayer, no display at all.
"Played" in VLC & MPC-BC, looking like your screenshot.

Played correctly in Media Player Classic.

So it looks to be codec/player settings that will make the difference.
Most likely it will play in any of the mentioned players - if set up to handle the specific requirements of that (or similar) clips.

I think my VLC is fine, the issues are different.

Sometimes the file I download is smaller (another example, from whichever video), say: 90 MB - and it does not play. When I restart Firefox, download the same video again it turns out to be 220 MB. and it plays in VLC.

It's not only about playing in VLC or not; I use to demux the OGG from WEBM files. When it does not play in VLC, I can't demux; when it plays in VLC I can demux as well; you get the idea.

In my case, it sure looks to be codec/settings.

That sounds like a different issue.
What download manager are you using (or browser built-in)?

What does FlashGot say the download size should be?
Does it always say 220 yet sometimes you get 90?
If so, that seems like a download issue to me.
If it says 90 sometimes & 220 others, that would be different.

I use stock Firefox; no external manager.

My FlashGot does not say what the download size should be; though i remember earlier versions did; Not sure where can i see it in latest version.

Sorry for bumping; this one is quite annoying for me. I ask if you have the same issue as well or only me? I can't believe you don't download YouTube videos. ) Thank you.

FlashGot Media (icon) does show the sizes for me.

VLC does not work (unless you consider "working" to be as your screenshot shows).

Download MPC-HC & see if that plays the clip for you.

The main issue - regardless of my video player (I need the extracted .ogg audio most of the time anyways)

Consider this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJsSMT0GEiY

With stock Firefox with only FlashGot added, no other tweaks, considering the medium.webm video downloads, once I get a 6 Mb file, the other time a 12 Mb file. Why?

Here I wanted to include the direct links to both files respectively, but the spam filter got them. How to proceed?

You can either break the links, eg by removing the protocols, or you can send them to a moderator to post for you.

Sorry you're having so much trouble, but the filter is important...

There are both "Dash" & Non-dash varieties of the clips.

Dash have audio & video separately, & if you wanted both, you would have to download both. And if you wanted them to play "together" (as in the clip playing both the audio & video) you would have to join ("mux") them together.

Non-dash are a single clip containing both the audio & video.

Non-dash, webm, medium, is 12 MB, containing audio & video in the one clip.

Dash, video/webm, medium, is 6 MB, containing only the video.
If you also wanted the audio, you would have to download, separately, audio/webm, medium, 3 MB.
And if you wanted the to play "together", like the non-dash, you would have to mux them together.

Sorry. This is very annoying. I wrote a post, simple Youtube and image hyperlinks, got caught by antispam filter, pressed the back button, the whole post disappeared. :(

Other forums are set up not to disappear my whole post when I press the back button to edit; can you fix at least that?

OK, who is the moderator and what is her direct link I am supposed to PM all my future posts for convenience in the future?

Thank you

You or I or anyone can start a separate thread on that.
I was about to the other day, but never did get to it.

@Thrawn:

You suggested to PM my post to a moderator so she can post it with links. For example, could you tell me the exact nick of such a mod I could try? Thanks

You could try Thrawn or myself ;-).

You could try (& I wouldn't know if it would work or not, but...):

Code: Select all

[quote]
setting the "Do not automatically parse URLs" option (just below the Submit button)
breaking links: "http: www.google.com"

(I actually ran into one hyperlink yesterday that I wanted to post that automatically reverted to "text"... but I didn't look to see why that may have happened?)
