[RESOLVED] NoScript causes some Yahoo! pages to stall

Post by Maverickz »

Recently I have noticed that when I go to yahoo.com and click on links a new tab immediately appears and the page starts to load, then Firefox seems to hang for several seconds before it continues to load. The page always eventually loads but while it is hung Firefox is completely unresponsive. NoScript is the ONLY plugin that I have loaded and when I disable NoScipt the pages load immediately without hanging.

This is happening on 3 different PC's (Win 7, Win 8.0, and Win 8.1.1) all of which have the same combination of Firefox and NoScript.

I am experiencing exactly the same behavior but with NoScript 2.6.8.31 and SeaMonkey 2.26.1; most Yahoo pages take forever to load and the browser appears to hang. I also have no plugins loaded other than NoScript and disabling NS results in an immediate cure.

FWIW, I don't recall this behavior with NS version 2.6.8.29.

I would like to report the exact same experience in OSX 10.9.3 as well as Win7 64-bit. Firefox becomes completely unresponsive during pages loads from Yahoo. If I click on any of the main page tabs, the page starts to open and then stalls for several seconds. Firefox is essentially locked up unresponsive. Then after several seconds, the page seems to finish loading and Firefox begins to respond. If I disable NoScript (2.6.8.31), the problem goes away. Very frustrating.

Example link (exact URL) where clicking on links seems to result in a temporary "hang"?
What sites do you have (Temp-)Allowed there?
*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

Example? That would be just about every link. Go to the Yahoo home page (www.yahoo.com) and click on just about ANY link listed under "All Stories" (or anywhere else for that matter). NS hoses all of them.

Also, please note that this behavior, as previously mentioned, was recently introduced. I have made absolutely no changes in my browser settings, or elsewhere, before I started experiencing anomalies when opening pages on Yahoo. I have also made no changes in NS other than upgrading to v2.6.8.31

I cannot reproduce with nothing (Temp-)Allowed. I just get a blank page with a meta refresh. If I allow the refresh, the destination loads fine, no hanging.
If I Temp-Allow yahoo.com & yimg.com, it hangs for about a second, but that's not unexpected.

Same behaviors with NS 2.6.8.29.

EDIT Oh, I had Adblock Plus enabled, never mind. Confirmed with ABP set to "Disable everywhere".
EDIT2 Actually with ABP disabled everywhere I get hang with NS 2.6.8.29 also, but it doesn't seem to be for quite as long as with 2.6.8.31rc1.

After browsing around Yahoo for a while (not something I do), I would hit a page (generally on left click rather then middle-click) where it would go opaque & I would get a "spinner" for a "too long" period before the page finally loaded.

But it wasn't something I could duplicate or find any reason for?

So sometimes a page lags.

Just don't know if its associated with NoScript.
(I didn't test other NoScript versions or with NoScript disabled.)

The problem for some reason is a lot worse when clicking to articles from Yahoo rather than either going to directly to any of the links so me posting a link would not be helpful, it also does NOT seem to happen when clicking on Search results. Just open Yahoo.com and start clicking the Links in the scrolling banner of articles.

The issue with certain Yahoo articles is caused by NoScript. However, it only seems to apply if one allows "yahoo.com" and/or "yimg.com". The second I withdrew those permissions, those slow-loading Yahoo pages loaded instantly. I suggest trying both ways and observing the results. With those sites allowed, you are going to see slow (mostly very slow) load times.

Something is most definitely wrong and the developers of NoScript should investigate further, IMHO. Again, this behavior is new - it wasn't happening with previous builds.

I saw mostly fast, with an odd time or three a very slow load.

If you disable NoScript do you still see slow page loading?

No, I do not. If I disable NoScript, pages load normally. The following is sort of a rundown of the behavior with various configurations:

Disable NoScript: Pages load normally with minimal, or no, delay.

Enable NoScript while allowing both "yahoo.com" and "yimg.com": Awful! Some pages load slowly while others even result in the browser appearing to be hung.

Enable NoScript while forbidding "yahoo.com" and "yimg.com: Pages load normally with minimal, or no, delay.

I should mention that the pages that load slowly, very slowly, or result in a temporary hang, all seem to be links to articles that redirect from Yahoo.com to the likes of "sports.yahoo.com", "news.yahoo.com", and the like. I should also mention that this behavior has been reported elsewhere and, according to some of those reports, Adblock Plus ameliorates the NoScript/Yahoo loading anomaly.

Once again, this behavior is new; it did not appear in previous versions of NS.

Ok more testing results.

I have found that the behavior disappears just by blocking either yahoo.com OR yimg.com, it does not have to be both. Also I can now confirm that installing the Adblock Plus extension does in fact fix the issue even with both yahoo and yimg enabled.

Really strange problem it seems.

I can confirm that installing Adblock Plus appears to resolve the issue.

However, I have found that although marking either yahoo.com or yimg.com as untrusted eliminates the behavior (i.e., slow page loading/hanging disappears), the comments near the bottom of the articles never do seem to load.

This is a really strange problem indeed.

Blocking yahoo or yimg results in less than full functionality on the Yahoo site - not a good solution for me, nor is installing an extension (Adblock) just to be able to restore functionality on Yahoo.

NoScript needs to be fixed.
