[Inv] Videos won't play on many sites after no-script update

Post by Melli27 »

Hello,

I did a search on this forum for my question and didn't really see anything specific to my issue, nor any answers that related either. So I hope i am not repeating an oft asked question.

This is a relatively new issue that started two no-script updates ago. Videos will not play on major news sites such as NBC, or a few local news stations, or on some TV sites such as The CW. YouTube is totally fine as are Vimeo videos. What happens is, well....nothing. I get a black video screen and clicking on play does nothing, or I get the never ending "working" symbol on the black screen after clicking on the play prompt. I have uninstalled no-script and reinstalled it recently and that did not help. Everything on my computer is up to date, not to mention I have never had this issue until after the 2nd to last no-script update.

So here's what I do with the no-script. I get to the home page of whatever site it is I want to watch a video and I just click on "temporarily allow all" - I'll forbid the ones I know I don't need later if need be, and if I am unsure I leave it allowed. Then I get to the video page and do the same, temporarily allow all, sometimes more than once just to be sure after it refreshes nothing else adds on to the scripts list. But I can't temporarily allow more than a few times else I lose the no-script menus and buttons all together after the site refreshes and I can't get them back to see what objects are blocked or what new scripts are added (that actually is a different new issue). But after temporarily allowing all several times, still no video will play. I do have those sites in my whitelist too.

On The CW TV site the scripts menu list of what to allow or not allow only includes a few google scripts and nothing else, so I can't even see what scripts are possibly being blocked on that site and have no way to allow them that I can see.

I am feeling rather frustrated as I've no idea what else I can do to allow the videos to play. Any ideas or tips?

Thanks!
Melli

use the toolbar icon, not the infobar (which disappears if scripts are completely allowed, or if the main site is script-allowed but there are other sites you've marked as untrusted)
if you have no toolbar icon, then follow Hecuba's daughter's advice re: getting that working

if all scripts are allowed on the site, and you're sure it's noscript blocking the video, check the browser console (ctrl-shift-j) and post here any related messages
(if you don't know if any the messages are related, turn off css warnings and post whatever's left)
*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

Thanks for the replies all - sorry for my late response.

I am about to update my Firefox to latest version and haven't yet tried the new profile or diagnostics yet, but prior to doing all of that I thought I'd give it one more try and attempted the NBC news videos again and this time the NBC videos finally worked! Go figure. The yellow spinning thing that shows after you press play hung for a little bit but finally the video kicked in. In all my previous attempts I definitely gave it time to kick in but it never did.

I did try Hecuba's Daughter's advice for the NBC videos but there was no "shockwave-flashATnbcnewsdotcom" showing in my scripts to allow or forbid so I was not able to do that last step. However, as mentioned, that site's videos seem to now be working for me so that script doesn't seem to have been the issue - no idea what the problem was but at least that one is solved. Fingers crossed it remains working :)

However, the CW videos still don't work. Here's the URL for the CW video I just tried:
http://www.cwtv.com/cw-video/the-100/ea ... bb7b2f9292

I temporarily allowed all on the CW site where the video was located but like I said in my original post, the only scripts in the drop up menu are google related. There is nothing else to allow.

With the CW videos, I just have a blank black screen after the intro automatically starts (with the green screen and the little "tv now" ditty) but then it goes black and nothing happens from there after clicking on the play arrow.

As an aside, I do not have the no-script toolbar icon up in the top left corner. Previous to the last two updates I used to have the icon showing in the upper left corner of the page (next to my back button) in addition to the bottom no-script toolbar, even after several temporary allows. But it no longer shows up in the top area at all.

barbaz, I did as you suggested with looking at the consule - never done that before and have no idea what I am looking at - lol, but also I don't know what you mean by "relevant info" so I wasn't sure what to paste here (there is a lot of stuff on there). I turned off the CSS warnings and what was left looked like it was all Avast related - everything in blue on far right was avastwrc.js:# (the pound sign just indicates various numbers that were with each one). Could this be an Avast blocking issue then and nothing to do with no-script after all? I haven't done anything different with my Avast and things were fine up until two no-script updates ago. Though I guess that doesn't mean Avast didn't do an update and whatever they did changed things recently.

Meanwhile, I'll try the new profile and diagnostics suggestion next and report back.

Works for me.
Earth Kills or something or the other.

Code: Select all

+ajax.googleapis.com
+cwtv.com
As a test, create a new, clean Profile.
Allow those two domains.
See if your clip plays.

Thanks therube, I tried to add ajax.googleapis.com to my whitelist on the no-script add-on and once I enter in the full URL the "allow" button fades out so I can't allow it. It's not already in the list. I noticed that happened on a few others I tried to add as well at a previous time. There is a googleapis.com already on the list however, but not sure it's the same thing. cwtv.com was already on the list.

But in any case, I created a new profile per your suggestion and made sure no extensions were added globally to that new profile (they weren't). And lo' and behold the cwtv.com videos work just fine. I understand the next step is to start adding one extension at a time to find out which one is blocking the video – so first up to add was the no-script add-on and the video worked fine afterwards.

Next I enabled the Avast add-on and the video would not play – got the black screen again. So it appears the Avast add-on is the culprit after all! I had disabled it on my default profile way back when I was first troubleshooting but it did not solve the issue then (I had restarted firefox after I disabled it too). But I just went back to my default profile and disabled Avast again and the video does play now on that profile too with it disabled. No idea why it didn’t solve it the first time I disabled it but no matter....all seems good now on both profiles.

Issue can be marked as solved.

Thanks for all of your help! :)

If googleapis.com is allowed, then all subdomains are automatically allowed.

Glad you found the problem addon :)
