Black/whitelist failures

Post by Satyr Scott »

I've been having this problem for some time now, on two computers. I've uninstalled NS, Firefox, reinstalled, still doesn't help. Not sure what's doing this but...

I go to a website I visit frequently, like familysearch.org. I have to allow familysearch.org fscdn.org lds.org and ldscdn.org to make things work right... Note that I'm NOT temporarily allowing them.

Next time I go to that website (new Firefox session), I have to re-allow them all. Also, sites that I block, do not stay blocked. It's becoming VERY old having to explicitly allow scripts from all the common sites I visit, each and every time. ...not to mention, having to remember which supplementary sites work with what...

Along with this issue, NS is stuck somehow. EVERY time I load Firefox, I get a NoScript tab saying, "Congratulations, you've updated to version..." and it's -- most of the time -- the same version I've been running, unless there's minor version changes that are not shown on that page, and NoScript is being updated 3x or more per day?!?

What, pray tell, could be fighting with NS?

Something is preventing your prefs.js from saving and/or loading. Check that you have write permissions to your profile directory and the files inside it, and that your user.js and lockpref file (if either exists) aren't blocking changes to NoScript's settings. Also, are you sure that there isn't some other program you're installing on your computers that's specifically blocking Firefox from reading or saving prefs.js?

You'd expect to see something like this if, eg, you were running Firefox inside Sandboxie and flushing the sandbox every time. Curious.

If this is happening on two different computers, then creating a new profile might not help, but it's worth a try.

@barbaz:

Explain that in babytalk? Please? As far as I know, nothing should be blocking JavaScript in any way, except NoScript.

@Thrawn:

No sandboxing, proxy, or anything like that.

@(whoever)
I've done clean install of firefox and NS.. (meaning, I go in manually after uninstall, and kill all the profiles and supplemental information left behind when Firefox uninstalls) and the problem comes back within a few days.

Does it affect other Firefox and/or NoScript and/or other extensions' settings/options which get "forgot"?

I don't know that much about Windows, but I'll try for Win7...

prefs.js is just a local file that stores your custom Fx settings
go to start -> all programs -> accessories -> command prompt
type

Code: Select all

cd AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

attrib /S
and look for files with "R" listed before their full path, particularly pay attention to what's listed for prefs.js

*probably* not relevant if the answer to Giorgio's question is "yes", but user.js would be in the profile directory (C:\Users\(YOUR_USERNAME)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(whatever the one folder there is)), see the link re: lockpref file
barbaz wrote:Also, are you sure that there isn't some other program you're installing on your computers that's specifically blocking Firefox from reading or saving prefs.js?
if this, could be an antivirus or other security software, but I don't know enough about win to really explain this in "babytalk", sorry

I am having a similar issue using FireFox 37.0.2, Noscript 2.6.9.22 and Win 8.1. I've done the install, uninstall , new profile, multiple computers. etc. I sincerely believe that my problem involves write protection (or similar) in win8.1. I get the NoScript symbol in my browser and when I click on it, I get 2 choices: About NoScript 2.6.9.22... and Options.... and 4 menu divider lines.

When I click on Options, the current window appears but the whitelist is empty; nothing checked in Advanced, General, Embeddings, Appearance or Notification. I was successfully using this profile. I had several FF explorer tabs open. I left my computer overnight and came back to see that Windows (or something) had done a reset of my PC. After restarting FF, I was unable to view previously viewed sites. This is when I noticed the results in the Option file.

I am currently condemned to using Chrome with SafeScript. Any suggestions? Any information that I might provide?

> new profile

And the only thing you have done with that new profile is to install NoScript into it?
If not, then try that.

Honestly, I was hoping to push the "EASY" button. In further reflection, this occurred around the time I updated my windows 8.1. My "Installed Updates" show 38 updates on 5/13/2015. It seems to be a possibility that one of the "enhancements from Microsoft" caused the problem that I'm now having with NoScript. I balked at uninstalling any update until NoScript started working again. I'm reluctant to restore to a previous point, also.

Thanks for the link. Is it possible that an update could have caused my issue? I did find a virus after using Housecall. I reinstalled FF, NS afterwards but NS would not retain my settings.

Seems unlikely that a Microsoft update would cause this, but then again I don't use Windows...

Try scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (the free version will do) and maybe AdwCleaner as well.

You will also need to start from a fresh profile - the uninstaller won't delete it unless you opt for it to.

I'm in the process of scanning. I will re-install then report results.

The 2 packages that barbaz recommended. Maybe, next time I'll read more and follow the advise faster. Probably not! ;)
