how to deal with annoying fabrik scripts @ nytimes

Post by ginahoy »

The nytimes site recently started using scripts with a URL that looks something like this: http://core6usw2.fabrik.nytimes.com

Forbidding the script doesn't stop future instances because the numbers keep changing. Here's an example of a nytimes article... http://nyti.ms/190Z2Jh

As you can see, this site has a bunch of other scripts that I blocked long ago. But I have to "forbid" the fabrik script again and again, every time they change the number. Is there a way to handle this better in NS?

mark 'fabrik.nytimes.com' as untrusted
*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

That's exactly what I'd like to do but don't know how. NS only prompts me to forbid the entire URL. I checked the Options menu and FAQ to see if untrusted URL's can be entered manually, like a blacklist, but didn't see anything like that. I'm probably overlooking something.

Options | Appearance (at least temporarily) enable 'Full Domains'.

Thanks, I didn't know what that option was for. But now I'm confused. For some reason, NS displayed the full address whenever it encountered that script, even though only the "Base 2nd Level Domains" option was enabled (the default). I guess I'll have to wait until the script increments again to see what NS does with "Full Domains" option selected.

Ok, I think I discovered how to handle this. With Full Domains enabled, I first had to forbid nytimes.com (base 2nd level domain) then allow www.nytimes.com. Once I did that, I load an article and was prompted to forbid fabrik.nytimes.com, which I marked as untrusted. Then I allowed nytimes.com again (without the www) since they use a lot of subdomains. Hopefully that won't override my untrusted designation of fabrik.nytimes.

You can also edit your blacklist using the 'Advanced Users' information at http://noscript.net/features#blacklist

Thanks. I was originally looking for a blacklist before posting here. Glad to know there's a way to edit, even if not supported in the UI.
