[Resolved] Manual language settings

Hi there.

Thanks for this very good addon, I won't survive without it
Since I accidentally installed Firefox in English, NoScript also is in English now. I cannot change anything about it, so a manual language setting would be ideal. Is this possible?

Secondly, I have a suggestion: In German I'm used to click on the NoScript icon and see immediately: "URL - block temporarily", "URL - block permanently" and so on. In English, sadly the wording is the other way around: "block temporarily - URL", "block permanently - URL" and so on.
The German version is much better recognizable at first sight, than this. Could be better to turn this around...

If you install a Language Packs for FF, will that also cause NoScript to change too?


(I would think it odd that the layout would be different in different languages? Possible that some other extension was used to manipulate that?)


On an en-US system, running an -HU SeaMonkey, NoScript shows first Temporarily, then Allow (in bold).

It sounds like you intended to install Firefox in German from the beginning, so wouldn't it make more sense to install the German-language version of Firefox? Then the add-ons you install, like NoScript, should default to that language.
(You could keep the English-language Firefox if you wish, setting the German browser and profile as default.)

NoScript has temporary "allow", but not temporary blocking. (English menu uses Forbid, = verhindern; verbieten.) If you Forbid a script that shows as allowed, this block is always permanent, unless you undo it later.

I believe that this difference is due to a fundamental difference in sentence structure between German and English.

Mit Deutsch das Verb am Satzende normal zu setzen ist. (Translation: With German, it is normal to put the verb at the end of the sentence.)
But in English, verbs often precede objects.
"Diese Platz verhindert" --- "Forbid this web site".

(I apologize for my poor German; it has been many years since I attended school.)

You can change the language to German for anything that has a German language pack installed (including NoScript) by setting the general.useragent.locale to "de" and restarting your browser.

thanks for getting back to this.
I think, sadly, I didn't make my standpoint very clear - sorry bout that.
I know already, that there are the language-differences and therefore there is the slight, but understandable, other way of displaying the messages within NoScript.

But that was not my point - the point was (and yes, I did install the german langpack in the meantime - thanks for the hint), that it's better readable when the wording - regardless of the language - is AFTER the domainname. In some cases, like german, there would have to be another wording, that's clear.
And I didn't intend to confuse you guys with the false wording of my NoScript mousemenu - I named it out of my remembering, so it was the slightly false wording...
Sorry about that.

I just think that it would make more sense for a more easy "recognizability" that NoScript had a common, language-independent, way of displaying these messages in the form of
SUBDOMAIN - BLOCK
WEBSITE - BLOCK
SUBDOMAIN - ALLOW
WEBSITE - ALLOW
etc.

But of course, that was just a suggestion that I wanted to let you guys know

Btw: And my initial install of Firefox in English was a "mistake" that I think took place via the mozilla-download-service, that may have recognized a wrong proxy or ip-setting which put the english download into my download-directory

With all due respect, "Temporarily allow yahooapis.com" is the standard construction (action verb > object) of sentences in English, Spanish (as I remember it), and I believe of other Romance (Latin-derived) languages, such as French and Italian. These sentences are in the form expected by these speakers and make for smooth reading. What is natural to one is unnatural to another, and surely other languages contain such differences. Let each of the many translators (to whom we are very grateful) phrase it as it would be in their native tongue.

Do you use a proxy server located in the UK, US, or Commonwealth nations?
In any case, going directly to www.mozilla.de would have taken you to the German home page, with a button that automatically downloads the German Firefox.

It was just a SUGGESTION, guys...

And no, I don't use proxies. Sometimes, in very rare cases, the download-center gets it wrong and you can't do anything about it and then you have - accidentally - the english version installed.

Agreed that there is nothing more to be said here. But I never got a negative vibe, only an interesting academic discussion of languages and the differences among them. I'm sorry if you mistook that as negative or argumentative (but you don't need to come back and say you didn't ); actually, I found it rather fascinating that the differences among the Latinic and the Teutonic/Anglo-Saxon branches of language would reflect in something so apparently minor as a menu entry. Makes perfect sense, in retrospect.
