[RESOLVED] Google image page doesn't function properly

Post by rcrumbb »

As most of you know, Google just changed the layout of its image search results page. The column on the left side is gone, replaced by a tool bar on the top of the page (much like Bing's search results page). The change happened about a week or two ago. Ever since the change, Google has been slammed by complaints due to their removal of the feature that allowed used to filter image results based on file size. Google replaced it with a very Bing-like "Search Tools" button that contained a dumbed-down choice of only "small - medium - large" options that appear below the button after clicking on it. This morning Google re-introduced the file size filter, so now clicking the "Search Tools" button reveals "small- medium - large - larger than 2MB - larger than 8MB" and so on.

I was able to click that button yesterday and see the "small - medium - large" options. Today, Google added the "Larger than.." option addition to that button, and now clicking that button does not work as it should. Something seems to happen when I click the button (I see my page scroll bar on the right suddenly grow by 50% only to shrink back to its original size in almost a blink of an eye) but the Search Tools options do not appear. After repeated clicking on that button, sometimes I see the Search Tools options for a brief moment but they disappear in a blink of an eye. I tried the search page with IE and it worked just fine. With Firefox, I disabled all of my addons, re-enabled them five at a time and tried the Google image search page again until I discovered that NoScript was the culprit. I chose "Enable Scripts Globally" but that did not change a thing. I shut the browser, cleared the cache, scripts enabled globally, still no luck. Disabling NoScript allows the Google page to work properly, but disabling NoScript is not an option for me.

Surely there is a setting within NoScript that will resolve this issue but I am hesitant to tinker around with it until I am further informed, perhaps there is an update in the works that will address this issue. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1, Firefox 17, and NoScript 2.6.1.

I thank you for your time and courtesy.

Is there anything on your Untrusted menu? Or Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J, or Firefox Tools > Web Developer > Error Console)?

Nothing is marked as Untrusted on that page. However, I took a look at the Error Console and there were some Warning entries but no Errors so here's what I did: I shut down Firefox. I ran CCleaner with CCEnhancer and cleaned everything. I browsed to Google, clicked on Images, ran an image search, and cleared the Error Console. Then I clicked on the "Search tools" button. Six warnings appeared in the Error Console. I cleared the Console and clicked the "Search tools" button again. The same six warnings appeared again (Actually, there are two warnings. One of them is repeated four times. The other is repeated twice. There is a one-word difference in the warnings).

Here is the first warning (Repeated twice with the word "before" and twice with the word "after" ) --
  • Warning: XUL box for _moz_generated_content_before element contained an inline #text child, forcing all its children to be wrapped in a block.
    Source File: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul
This message boards anti-spam filter won't let me post the second Warning for some reason. It says Warning: Unknown Property -moz-border-.. etc, and then "Declaration dropped" and then a long Google link.

Hmm...I'm only seeing Large - Medium - Icon, no mention of 'Small' or specific sizes. Maybe it's a localisation issue? I'm in Australia.

You can ignore warnings in the Error Console; NoScript will generate Info or Error messages. Doesn't sound like there's anything there...

The spam filter is sadly necessary, but yes, it's very aggressive. If you need to in the future, you can send a private message to a moderator to have us post something.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, Firefox 17, and NoScript 2.6.1 on a virtual machine. The problem remains even with NoScript set to allow all scripts. I've tinkered with the settings, clearing the cache and restarting Firefox after each new setting, and still the problem remains.

So let me be more precise as to the functionality of the Google Image Search results page. On a Google image search results page, and with NoScript disabled, upon clicking the "Search tools" button there is what looks to be a frame that slides down beneath the frame that contains the "Web", "Images", "Shopping", "More", "Search tools", and "SafeSearch" buttons. Clicking the "Search tools" button again hides that frame by making it slide back up. In that sliding frame are filter options for images that include small, medium, large, and larger than.

I am in New York City. Google has only just started to roll out their new layout for their Image Search results page, so perhaps it hasn't propagated completely yet.

Here's another clue: I ran a search at DuckDuckGo.com. Then I clicked the little down-arrow just to the right of the magnifying glass on the search bar. From there I chose "Images - Google (!gi)". Doing that takes me to the Google Image Search results page WITH THAT SLIDING FRAME ALREADY SLID DOWN AND FUNCTIONING, but the "Search tools" button will not make the frame slide back up! Surely someone with a keen knowledge in all things html will diagnose this problem. I hope, I hope.

The problem seconded with Linux Mint 13, blank Firefox 17 and blank NoScript.

In my case clicking the "Search tools" button reloads the page, so the slide window has no time to open.

Disabling NoScript makes the slider function properly (selecting "Allow Scripts Globally" is not enough).

Thank you very much!

As a work-around I manually added tbs=isz:l to the url, like so:

Code: Select all

http://www.google.com/search?q=test&tbm=isch
   ->
http://www.google.com/search?q=test&tbm=isch&tbs=isz:l

I'm happy to say that the v 2.6.2rc2 Development Build does indeed resolve this issue. Well done, folks, and I thank you all very much!
