What do you mean by "encapsulation" exactly in this context?
Which download manager are you using?
Have you got a site/download to exactly reproduce this issue?

woops soz for lack of info.
By encapsulation i mean it just downloads the file but doesn't give it an extention (eg .flv, avi, wav etc etc). I can manualy give it one (say .flv) and some players like VLC will play it but other like winamp wouldn't. Also media converters (like roxio, adobe (sorta) media converter) and other apps won't touch these files
[Just to let you know vlc is a player that can play many "broken" types of media that other players wont touch]
I am using the default manager and am using the auto start all downloads - intercept downloads on extention. When i go to youtube i can download but as stated no encapsulation.
Don't know if this problem exists on other file types (wav, avi, etc) or if its limited to .flv. Any help appriciated.

YouTube video's would typically come down named as video.flv (or possibly named as the page "title").

Regardless of whether an extension is tacked on to a file, a file is what it is. Whether a particular media player is smart enough to know what to do with a file with no extension, is up to the player.

Because a file does not have an extension, does not necessarily make it "broken". (A broken video file in typical terms would be an AVI file that was not fully downloaded. Typically to play an AVI it needs to be complete. "Dumb" media players need to look for data at the end of the file in order to successfully play the file. If the end of the file is not there, they cannot play the file. A "smarter" player can play back the file even when parts of the file are missing.)

Otherwise you may be running into codec issues where a particular media player does not have the proper codecs to play a particular video file. This would become more apparent (more recently) with "HD" Flash videos from YouTube when attempted to play on an older media player that does not have the proper codec to play the file.

umm u seem to be getting confused. WHen i dwonload from youtube i get no .flv at the end  its just the title. Normally it have name.flv. When i add the flv some players play most dont. The problem is i want to convert those files but the converters won't touch them. Other flv files that i have are fine and the players and converters work fine.

Not sure what's going on, maybe something is getting lost in the naming or saving, because when I download from youtube, it always gives me SOMETHING.flv (sometimes its video.flv and sometimes a sequenceofnumbers.flv) but never got them without an extension. hmmm.

I know what the problem is. It has something to do with it downloading it from the cache. That is what the intercept download thing is. Because when i download from youtube after the video has fully downloaded its instantianous.
