Was NoScrript the reason Wordpress terminated my Blog?

Post by thexeez1 »

I had been working on a blog at wordpress for a couple of months. I recently downloaded the Avast anti-virus and also Noscript which I love both. But, when I went to log into Wordpress last night I got a pop-up window that said my account was terminated, and said something about my Javascript being disabled. Could this problem be because of settings within my Noscript? Can anyone tell me why this happened and what to do? Thanks for any help. Thexeez1

The reason why your account has been terminated is very unlikely to be JavaScript being disabled. At least is the first time I hear of something like that, and it would be a crazy policy.

You should really ask Wordpress' staff why they terminated your account (an error, most likely).

Most likely, there's no correlation between the "Your account has been terminated" and the "You've got JavaScript disabled" message, other than the page showing the former believing to need JavaScript to correctly operate and its domain not being in your whitelist yet.

I strongly doubt this as I have a wordpress blog and I know at least 15 others who do and have combinations of NS, Avast, AVG and a ton other things and none of them have ever been the reason for that. You might want to check with the wordpress people to see what policy you supposedly violated to get your account terminated.

Two things occurred at the same time, and, as is natural for us human beings, you associated one with the other. The truth appears to be different. Fortunately, we have the use of logic, and we can discern a difference between what we once saw as the same.

JavaScript is a client-side technology. JavaScript does not run on a server, such as the one at Wordpress. NoScript only affects JavaScript.

The message "your account is terminated" is traditionally associated on the Internet with one person being banned from a group. Usually this is either a mistake, or censorship. A termination of an account is usually made by a human. I imagine that on some systems that accounts are terminated automatically by a bot if X amount of spam is detected emanating from their account.

Termination of accounts is never done because the user's web client does not fully support Javascript. That is not how things traditionally occur on the Internet. At most you would be locked out and asked to use a web client that supports Javascript. In the case of NoScript, you can then just enable JavaScript.

What seems to have occurred is that Wordpress terminated your account. Subsequently, a period of time passed. Then you went to your Wordpress account. To notify you of the termination, the Wordpress server triggered a pop-up window to open on your web client (browser). This pop-up had embedded JavaScript in it, or was triggered by JavaScript. In any case, NoScript saw something on its list, and blocked it. The Wordpress server's message probably included an HTML code that would only display if JavaScript was not running, and that said "You have JavaScript disabled."

You saw the pop-up window and the message about JavaScript being disabled. Of course, it was blocked by NoScript so it appeared to be disabled. Nevertheless, that message was not what terminated your account. Your account was terminated either by a staff person at Wordpress, or by a bot at Wordpress. There is also the very unlikely but theoretically plausible scenario that a hacker terminated your account.

What you need to do is look in your e-mail for messages from Wordpress. They should have details about why your account was terminated. Send a message to Wordpress and ask them to reinstate your account. Give a logical reason why they should. At the very least they should provide you with a copy of your data, including blog posts. If you have no other way of getting back your data, however, you can look for copies in Google cache, Yahoo cache, Live.com cache, and archive.org.

I strongly recommend against using Wordpress as a web host. You might want to use their software, but, it would be best to secure your own domain name and web host. You'll be happier in the long run. Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Big problem I have with Wordpress right now is that I go on their forums and noone can or will answer this question. I no of no other way of reaching anyone either at Wordpress. About done with them though. I went to blogger.com and had a blog up in a couple of hours as opossed to the weeks I spent learning Wordpress. Thanks again for the knowledge.

That is an unfortunate side effect of using a free service, they will be very hard to get a hold of and rarely do they dedicate manpower outside of a community style setting to answer questions. I have sent questions to them in the past and some came back in days and some took weeks and some never got answered. They don't do it to be malicious but that is just the same a problem and a limitation. So as advised by someone else, try to maintain a copy of their wonderful software on your own hosting and learn how to use it effectively, you'll be glad in the long run and have much more freedom, get it here http://wordpress.org.

A couple of suggestions in the meantime:

1. Got to http://support.wordpress.com/ and see if anything will help
2. If nothing helps, go to http://support.wordpress.com/contact/ and submit a request

good luck.
