Not sure how they're doing it?
Most I could get were some swf files.
And their site (playback) leaves much to be desired (unless it is me?).

OK, I've got them, I believe, but now that I have them don't know what to do with them so that they'd be useful?
Oh, something like playback, lets say!
"Frag" files they are. MP4 it would seem.
This is probably what's going on, What I know about HTTP Adaptive Streaming.

Doyle's view is very biased and borders on fanboyism for Apple and doesn't provide a truly unbiased or clean comparison. Despite how we feel, to call a solution you are comparing "cancer" shows clear bias, specially that every other phrase is, "not as good as HLS", again clear bias. For all their faults, Microsoft tends to make solid solutions most of the time and Adobe, yeah I am not a fan either but has managed to stay a strong player in many fields that Apple could only hope i- it.
That being said, you are dealing with what appears to be Adobe implementation of adaptive streaming. It sucks but if you can get and download all the segments, you can use joiners to get a solid file. Extra step and a pain but still doable if you are motivated for the content. They are obviously making it harder because straight HTTP can be downloaded, RTMP can be easily downloaded in one file, so the only way to make it harder for people to rip content is to break it up and make it messy, successfully accomplished.
