I can't install noscript using firefox 3.0.4

Post by bireba »

Hi,
I am trying to install No Script, but after installation the compatibility check says that "No Script" is not compatible with firefox 3.0.4 . I have no idea how to update firefox as the inbuilt update feature is not working for firefox on the eee PC which I am using. What can I do?

(I previously had No Script on this computer, but I somehow lost it when I (unsuccessfully) tried to update firefox.)

Thank you for your help.

What distribution (name and version) are you using? Firefox was pre-installed?

I am using the Eee PC 900A. Firefox was preinstalled, but updated once to version 3.0.4 via the asus updating service. This service appears to be out of service though, as it has not offered any new updates for years. The OS is linux. I am trying to install the current version of no script. I saw that it says on the mozilla site that it is only compatible with firefox 3.0.9 and higher, but as no script was working fine on this computer just a couple of hours ago it should be possible to reinstall no script.

See if anything here helps, 2.1 Q: How do I install NoScript?

Older versions, if needed, can be gotten here: http://noscript.net/feed.

I installed the current NoScript "successfully" in FF 3.0.19.
(Man that is horribly outdated.)

*successfully. I got a crash on restart upon install. I got a crash on restat upon uninstall. Seems 3.0 no longer sends crash reports. Don't know if the crashes are specific to 3.0 or perhaps just a Profile issue on my end. (No tell what it's been used for.)

Ah, so Asus pre-installed their netbooks with their own Linux distribution (an operating system using the Linux component [kernel]) but then abandoned it. Sad story, probably harmed the Linux image in non-techie circles more than it helped it. :(

Even if you could find a way to install NoScript on your ancient Firefox now, sooner or later it won't be supported any more, not to mention that such an old Firefox version probably has problems with web pages utilising modern web features and also security issues (yes even when running under a Linux-based OS, e.g. some security issues relate to the interaction between webpages).

You could try to do a standalone installation of a newer Firefox version (standalone as in not coming from your packet manager, the central software of your distribution managing installations and updates of software) by getting the installer from the official Firefox download page: http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/#desktop, though the installation might fail because of the age of the distribution (Firefox links to certain system components).

Alternatively, the best solution, on a variety of grounds, would be to replace the distribution. Though this might turn out a challenging and time-consuming task for a person not particularly knowledgeable or enthusiastic about such matters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eee_PC#Linux_on_the_Eee_PC (on a good note: you would be not the only person mastering this challenge, so finding a helpful community of companions in misfortune should be possible)

I've had good results on my Eee PC using Puppy Linux on an SD card. Runs the latest Firefox without any trouble, seems to pick up the hardware OK, and is extremely fast. Under the original (Xandros-based) OS, any recent Firefox version would segfault on startup. Go figure.
