Downloading MP4 other than in 720p on Youtube (or elsewhere)

Post by marty5005 »

Hey all,

I was wondering if there was a way i could get MP4s in the 360p format to show up? Some scripts i used (most of which are all broken on FF14 for some odd reason, or due to a YT layout change) allowed me to get MP4 in 360, but FlashGot doesnt allow it. FLV is nice and all, but i use a phone and other devices and its much too time consuming to have to convert them when i can just access MP4 directly. The 720 and 1080 formats appear fine in mp4, but thats because those resolutions ONLY are available in MP4.

This would really be a great addition to the script if you can find time to add it! 8-)

URLs of these clips?
What scripts are they?

The Youtube clip I looked at, 360 was still flv & not till 1080 did you get mp4.
(Selectable, if available, from the youtube player controls.)

Hey Rube, thx for the response...

Well, yea, i have no problem accessing any resolution/format (720, 480, 360, etc). The only problem is, 360p comes in two flavors in virtually all Youtube videos (either FLV or MP4). When i load a video up (and switch to all formats so FG will display them) it will show them all just fine. But the MP4 version of 360p doesn't show, i can only get it in FLV format. I know it exists, because dozens of other scripts and mozilla addons show it available, but right now, none of them are working, either due to the FF 14 update or a new YT layout change of some kind. As for 720p that you mentioned, yea, i can get that in MP4 easily, but thats because 720p is ALWAYS in MP4. Some scripts or addons ive tried, when i select MP4, currently give me a 0k file, or switch the tab to a zillion character long URL, on a white page and no activity. I like the 360p MP4s, as its a much more popular and more accessible format when i put clips on other devices, which dont recognize FLV. I have to convert them and well, it just gets tiring to keep doing that. Surely there has to be a way for FlashGot to access that format for 360 videos?

As for the URLS, lol, well...as i said above, its pretty much every YT video out there. :D

Here, maybe this will help you. I tried a FF addon i recently was using, and here is what its video download menu looks like:
Image

When i click MP4 for 360p, the tab instantly switches to a blank page showing this in the URL bar:

Code: Select all

http://o-o---preferred---penteledata-abe1---v20---lscache5.c.youtube.com/videoplayback?upn=adIamWEIL34&sparams=cp,id,ip,ipbits,itag,ratebypass,source,upn,expire&fexp=917000,914501,925000,913551,915507,907217,907335,921602,922600,919804,920704,924500,906831,924700,913547,913546,904721,920706,924402,907344,912706,902518&key=yt1&expire=1343130690&itag=18&ipbits=8&sver=3&ratebypass=yes&mt=1343107639&ip=70.15.59.131&mv=m&source=youtube&ms=au&cp=U0hTSFFOTl9OSkNOM19JSFJHOkw0TkFFaE9uU3RF&id=f5580948485a3f53&newshard=yes&type=video/mp4;%20codecs=%22avc1.42001E,%20mp4a.40.2%22&fallback_host=tc.v22.cache5.c.youtube.com&sig=2C91E35DE97E87EA0B14CB18DF86D3ACB8301326.12DD76F7BC8684A8CB28164001A51C4E32F4B8DD&title=America%27s%20rich%20moving%20jobs%20out%20of%20the%20country%3F
Obviously, that is the download link, but it wont give me the FF download window, just this page each time. Oddly, the MP3, AAC and all the AUDIO formats download fine, but not the damn videos. Honestly, i dont know what is going on, because i have tried over 20 scripts and addons now and not a single one will allow me to download vids anymore. Since no one is posting or complaining about them not working, and also a developer who i spoke to said he uses the latest FF and it works for him, pretty much relegates the problem to being on my side--funny thing is, everything was fine until FF self-updated and put me on this new 14 version. I either get the above link in a blank page, or the ones that actually bring up the download window, instantly die with a 0k file (the file doesn't even show in the folder, just says 0k in the download manager). I disabled all my addons, ran some cleaners, clear cache, cookies, allowed pop ups, basically took all shields off i could, and still nothing. FG is the only thing working for me, and my only wish is that it would allow access to MP4 in 360p.

You can see how it shows the MP4 file there "type=video/mp4". I notice in Flashgot it shows all of that when you select a vid file to grab, cept its FLV instead. Basically, FG just doesnt recognize the MP4 for that particular resolution (my guess is the FLV extension takes precedence over everything else, ie, if 720 and 1080 were in FLV, it would likely default to that instead). I added the MP4 extension in FG's settings where you can enter your own file extensions, but that didn't help. I really do prefer FG as it works on so many other sites, as the other ones i was using only works on Youtube and a few others, but not the wide range FG has.

If you change the resolution of the video and it has a MP4 available format, it will detect and show it, I have never had an issue with that.

It appears that (the source of) a youtube page (may) include formats, sizes, that are not available for selection.

If it is enumerated (in the Quality selector) then when you change qualities, NoScript should see it.
Many are available here, URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV-ASc0qkrM

On the clip here, URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAkSIwaUaNc
only two FLV options are available, 240 & 360.

But there is also an MP4 version, not available for selection, & since you cannot change the Quality to select it, NoScript does not see it.

Using a bookmarklet, PwnYouTube, you can see (perhaps) more formats, sizes available on a page. (And you can use a really nice extension, FlashGot, to download directly from the links it obtained ;-).)

Also note that some (not all, depending on the codecs used, I suppose) FLV clips can quickly, easily, be "converted" ("losslessly") to MP4 using FFmpeg (or a GUI front end to it) in a matter of seconds.

songs from the wood Jethro Tull (hq).flv, uses an AVC video codec.
songs from the wood Jethro Tull (small).flv, uses an Sorenson H263 video codec.

The former will convert, the latter not.

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i "songs from the wood Jethro Tull (hq).flv" -vcodec copy -acodec copy "wood hq.mp4"

(Likewise you can quickly extract the audio. Again codec used matters. aac, came out in a second. mp3, it had to run through each frame block?)

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i "songs from the wood Jethro Tull (hq).flv" -acodec copy "wood hq.aac"

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i "songs from the wood Jethro Tull (small).flv" -acodec copy "wood small.aac"

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i "songs from the wood Jethro Tull (small).flv" -acodec copy "wood small.mp3"
(While all were low bitrate, the MP3 version sounded much better.)
(Oddly "wood small.aac would not play in MPlayer, but did in WMP.)
