Hi,
Thanks for NoScript.
After a recent update I am now not able to access some of my old favorite websites. In the NoScript list I am getting "forbid about:neterror" and it is grayed out.
What is the most likely cause of this and how do I get to see those websites again?
Thanks
Harry

About:neterror problem??

Re: About:neterror problem??
You sure those old sites still exist? What is the error message when you try to access the sites (e.g. it could be "Server not found").

Re: About:neterror problem??
about:neterror is a static-ish page that is generated by Firefox to give you some feedback or say that something went wrong. Scripting on THAT page has nothing to do with the original page you are trying to get to. That only comes up AFTER trying to reach the site failed, so kind of backwards to think that the neterror page is affecting the loading of your page. Its like saying that your OBGYN not being covered by your insurance is the reason you can't have a baby.
If you are reaching the neterror page which is a fairly generic and useless indicator of site ain't there, then there are a few reasons, none of which have to do with NoScript.
1) You don't have an internet connection for a million reasons.
2) You have an internet connection but have no access to the internet (layer 2/3 issues).
3) The site doesn't exist.
4) The site is down.
5) You are somehow not reaching the page due to your ISP or how you are connecting, run a traceroute to see where it breaks down and why you are not reaching it, how its being redirected that won't get you there.
I can go on forever, but you get the idea.
PS. Also since you said its greyed out, just wondering, do you have under HTTPS, active content only checked? Because greying like that means that unless its HTTPS it won't get processed, hence the greying out of the menu item. You can find what I mean here: NoScript Options|Advanced Tab|HTTPS Tab|Behavior Tab|Forbid active web content ...|Always/Never

Re: About:neterror problem??
Thanks for the replies but I was hoping for some practical suggestions instead of being treated like an idiot.
@GµårÐïåñ
You do not need to show me how clever you think you are as I have been professionally programming for 37 years. I have hand built computers with a soldering iron and parts. I have written software for some of the World's largest companies and much of the software is still in use. Nielsen (Japan, Canada, Australia and US), Smith Kline French, Halliburton and the list can go on. In "smart" I am sure I can run rings around you, but normally I would just keep that to myself. So, lead follow or get out of the way.
Your first two numbered items are puerile, insulting and specious.
@dhouwn
The websites were working fine, then I got an update from NoScript and the websites stopped working (minutes later) and I was presented with the neterror message in NoScript list. That's why I am asking on the NoScript site. It seems too great a coincidence to be anything else. -- But, I have been wrong before.

They are practical suggestions because what you are saying is completely unrelated to anything NoScript would do, hence the replies you got. If you were being treated like an idiot, we wouldn't reply, or at least speaking for myself, I wouldn't have taken time to write you a long reply.StandingWave wrote:Thanks for the replies but I was hoping for some practical suggestions instead of being treated like an idiot.
Wow really? I wasn't trying to show you anything but help you, because I KNOW I am clever and if you want to do the old lets whip it out and measure it, experience for experience, I got you beat by a landslide. So let's not make you look any more stupid by going down that route ok? You couldn't run a ring around me if I reduced the circumference to just r. Most of what I have done is classified and still used in ways that actually make a different that you couldn't comprehend. So you can take it, leave it, or beat it. You can name drop all you want, the list of names I can give you, would make you feel stupid for saying what you said, so I will spare you. But good for you, at least you are not an idiot, just wondering why you would think about:neterror has something to do with NS and not reaching a website, but maybe you skipped that part of how technology works.@GµårÐïåñ

I was sincerely and honestly trying to help you but you turned this into some kind of personal pissing contest which tells me you don't really care about the problem and have no understanding of it. The first two are very legitimate reasons for things not working, specially if proxies are involved, so instead of getting a dictionary to find words that you think make you look smart, just try to learn something useful to your problem. Anyway, I gave you legitimately good things to look at, you didn't even respond to the things I told you to check which means you either have no clue or just here to start something and I have no interest in wasting my time with someone clearly ignorant. I will let others try and help your highness who thinks he is too good for help when he came to ask a question. Its people like you that give Arizona a bad name.

Re: About:neterror problem??
Well, considering your first post (please try to re-read it for yourself from an outsider position) are our replies really unexpected? Not every NoScript user is on your "level" and your question was not very precise.StandingWave wrote:Thanks for the replies but I was hoping for some practical suggestions instead of being treated like an idiot.
Going back to your original post, about:neterror is one of those internal Firefox sites (listed under the noscript.mandatory about:config entry) that need to be allowed for normal usage (because of the buttons maybe?), therefore the menu entry is greyed out in this case. I can't think of many cases where NoScript would cause such an error, at most maybe with manual HTTPS enforcement (not automatic with HSTS since that's already build into the new versions) active but that's about it. Do you get the same error with a new profile (creating a new profile without deleting the old one should be no challenge for you) with all extensions deactivated, then with only NoScript, then with only NoScript and another of your extensions…? Could you try using the development version? Could you try to see whether the problem persists on current Firefox Beta, Aurora or Nightly?

How are you attempting to access them, from Bookmark, Location Bar ...?
Are the particular sites specifically noted to NoScript, i.e., whitelisted or untrusted?
