Flash Player sandboxing is coming to Firefox

Post by Hungry Man »

http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/02/fl ... refox.html
Today, Adobe has launched a public beta of our new Flash Player sandbox (aka “Protected Mode”) for the Firefox browser. The design of this sandbox is similar to what Adobe delivered with Adobe Reader X Protected Mode and follows the same Practical Windows Sandboxing approach. Like the Adobe Reader X sandbox, Flash Player will establish a low integrity, highly restricted process that must communicate through a broker to limit its privileged activities. The sandboxed process is restricted with the same job limits and privilege restrictions as the Adobe Reader Protected Mode implementation. Adobe Flash Player Protected Mode for Firefox 4.0 or later will be supported on both Windows Vista and Windows 7. We would like to thank the Mozilla team for assisting us with some of the more challenging browser integration bugs. For Flash Player, this is the next evolutionary step in protecting our customers.

Does Adobe not even know that Windows XP is officially on Microsoft's "Supported" list (for security and stability updates) for almost two more years?

Gee, thanks, Adobe.

(I'd still use an external sandbox or VM anyway, even on the supported systems. IMHO.)

Vista/7 already have a stronger sandbox built in (integrity levels) and it would likely be a whole other sandbox project for XP, which already is insecure and a sandbox isn't really going to change that.

How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

(At one point yesterday, had "plugin-containter" <Flash> expire on me. It was a W7 system, Flash running with Low Integrity.)

Great, now Flash is on a rapid versioning release schedule like Fx and Google, what kind of idiocy is this that is catching on?

Yeah Flash for Linux has always been inept and incomplete. I am referring to Windows version, Linux would be lucky to get a stable and secure Flash that is not community provided over the next 5 years, let alone rapid released. I am sure they'll get there if they ever manage to get it done.

Yeah its good but with all due respect, its hype doesn't live up to its functionality. FWIW.
