Component missing or corrupted

Post by radii »

Firefox 11.0
Flashgot 1.4.1

Repeated uninstalls/installs fails to resolve issue. Attempt to configure results in "...component missing or corrupted..." & flashgot does not appear as menu selection, nor in add-on bar.

Are you running with Admin privilege? Full write privileges to all necessary areas?

Any sandbox or VM getting in the way?

Where are you getting the download?

Machine been scanned for malware recently?

See General Troubleshooting Instructions, especially #3, 4, and 5.

Do any of those help?

IIUC, Flashgot does *not* appear In the Firefox Tools > Add-ons page? (or about:addons)

Does Flashgot appear as a sub-folder in your current Profile\Extensions folder?

I confess to not being familiar with "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications". On the off-chance that said mods make a difference, could you please try disabling it and see if it helps?

If none of the above apply:

Could you please create a clean profile from scratch, and then try a clean install of Flashgot in that profile? Leave all of the default settings in the new profile; add no other extensions, and copy nothing from the existing one.

If FG installs normally now, then extension conflicts or profile corruption become likely suspects.

If it doesn't, we'll have to look elsewhere, thanks.

Sorry to be so long in replying.

Flashgot DOES appear in Add-ons, shows enabled. Clicking on Preferences yields error message.

Have deinstalled, created new profile, reinstalled. No change.

Have 'removed completely' FF 11, reinstalled, Flashgot shows up, no change in problem.

In a couple of recent threads, FlashBlock (which is in your list) was shown to conflict with NoScript (which itself has flash-blocking capability; hence, no need for FB). Perhaps it also conflicts with FlashGot.

Confirming, in your "clean profile" test case, you tried to install FlashGot *only*, and no other add-ons?

Also,
Tom T. wrote:<snip> I confess to not being familiar with "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications". On the off-chance that said mods make a difference, could you please try disabling it and see if it helps? <snip>
Did you try this?

These add-ons (NoScript and FlashGot) are written for the supported versions of Firefox and Seamonkey. if Firefox has been altered in any way ...

If plain-vanilla, OOB Firefox with a clean profile will not install FlashGot successfully, then I would escalate this to Giorgio, thanks.

Yes, removed all add-ons, de-installed FF (removed completely), reinstalled, installed Flashgot, no joy.

De-installed (removed completely) Curl, reinstalled, restarted FF, no joy.

This is harder than it has to be. I've got to go to something else.

There's something more to this than meets the eye. Please let Giorgio take a shot at it. If it happens to you, it might happen to others, and he certainly needs to know about the issue.

Thank you for your patience.

Can you see any error message in your Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J) just after browser startup?

Repeated uninstalls/installs of what?
If of FF, it rarely fixes anything.
If of your Profile, then you have a chance.

> See General Troubleshooting Instructions, especially #3, 4, and 5.

#5, as a test, create a new, clean Profile.
Install only FlashGot.
Does that work?
(you may have done this already, just not entirely clear)

What does about:plugins show?

What is the exact error message you are getting?
Screenshot?

> What does the Ubuntu Firefox Modifications extension to firefox do?

It enables Firefox addons to be installed through the package manager.
...
According to Synaptic, it also provides some Ubuntu-specific configuration defaults.

This is an ubuntu provided version of FF?
As a test, if you were to download the Mozilla version directly & put that in (& again only with FlashGot), does that work?
(Looks like it would be a .tar.bz2 which I suppose you could manually unpack & run? <I know nothing of Linux.> 7-zip, or bzip2 & tar, extracts it easily. Then just run firefox-bin, I suppose.)
