Webm viewing problem

Post by Puzzled by .webm »

Firefox 11; NoScript 2.3.6; Windows 7 Home Premium: I am finding that I cannot view WEBM videos in Firefox, even after joining the YouTube webm beta-test.

When I bring up a webm video, I get the VLC icon in the middle of the video, even if I click on NoScript's icon and disable it. If I click on the VLC icon, I get the usual rotating loading icon, and then get returned to the VLC icon.

I have changed the Windows default program for the .webm extension to both Windows Media Player and Firefox, have rebooted and restarted Firefox, and continue to get the VLC icon I have deleted all youtube cookies.

I have to go into the Firefox add-ons manager, disable NoScript and restart Firefox in order to view the webm videos. Curiously, yesterday, even though I could not view the videos, i could use Download Helper 4.9.9 to capture the videos and watch them in VLC; today, for different videos, even that would apparently not work: The Firefox download manager would show the requested downloads, but they did not start.

Suggestions on how to remedy this, short of just not trying to view webm videos, that is?

Firefox should normally use its own decoders for webm content the VLC icon is just there for identification. Though there is also a VLC NPAPI-plugin, which AFAIK is not installed per default and even if it were it shouldn't have anything to do with this.

Thanks for the reply about the NoScript plugin that might have no bearing on my problem.

After posting my first message, I was reading a few messages in MozzilaZine, one of which reminded me that I had not mentioned, here, that I did clear the Firefox cache, which also, alas, had no effect on the malady.

Here's one URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN6viDjz0I8 . I figured that I might be asked for urls, but as I'd never used this forum, I decided to wait to see if that would happen.

All Youtube cookies cleared, as stated in my first post, to no avail, sigh.

(Perhaps someone will remind me to say thank you for providing assistance, as I'm sure I'd never do so by myself...).

Hey Rube! (The US circus workers' cry for help, which seems appropriate as I came here crying for help...): Thanks so much for taking the time to find that bug for me, I greatly appreciate your assistance.

I shall wade through the bug report, and may even understand at least part of it.

Speaking of the circus reminds me of a treasured family story: My wife and son and I flew from Crested Butte, Colorado, to Denver to see the Ringling Brothers, Barnum, and Bailey Circus. Kit was probably five at the time, and this may have been a birthday present. He sat through the entire performance without saying a word, not even seeming to enjoy anything, but when the circus ended, he asked "Can we can come back?"

Pardon this very minor point, not a reproach, just a clarification:

At the top of this forum: PLEASE READ THIS FIRST! -- FORUM RULES AND GUIDELINES
11) When reporting a problem or possible bug, please be sure to include in your first post:

a) The address or addresses (URL) where this occurs,
b) the exact steps we need to follow to reproduce your problem, and...
So, for the record, you have been asked. :)

(It's pretty much standard: citing a specific example that we ourselves can reproduce is usually much better, faster, and easier than abstract discussions.)

(If a link could possibly be perceived as trying to promote a site, break it:
http//example.com or
www dot example.com)

Cheers. Image
