Re: Don't Even Tell Me It Was A WordPress Exploit

Post by Giorgio Maone »

I believe it was a semi-humorous way to ask whether this server had been down because of an attack or something else.
That was something else (a hardware disaster) which we're currently recovering from.
No need to delete this thread, as it turned out informative, even if mildly inflammatory.

Thank you indeed, as I had tried to email you about the failure @ your informaction.com address, and received a MAILER-DAEMON bounce notice.

Had hoped there would be a general announcement -- perhaps put one up (temporarily) in Board Index and top of all fora, for those who may have wondered why they couldn't connect?

OP would have been very helpful indeed had it merely stated "what" was a WordPress problem. None of us got it.

(I thought phpBB forum sw and WordPress were two different things: one for, uh, forum, and one for blog? Hackademix was also down, powered by WordPress, which is why I figured server/hw/ISP etc. issues.)

@Giorgio, as you know from my communication with you that the server is down and there were issues but there would be a much more informative and productive and appropriate way to post something about it than this, however humorous it may seem. But hey, if you are ok with it, even given your confused response "uh?", then your house. It just made no sense to me whatsoever.

Turned this into a global announcement.
I'd like also to add that EasySpeedy (our housing provider in Denmark) responded to this incident by kindly offering us an upgrade to a 4x powerful and redundant server with no additional charge.
The downside is that we'll be quite busy with the migration tasks in the next few days.

Sounds good, at least something good came of it, however much hassle that it involved on your end and still will. Let me know if I can help in any way.

What GµårÐïåñ said about some good coming from it, esp. having a redundant server. This site is too security-critical to be offline for very long.

I'm sure the team will do all we can to minimize the load on you while the migration is accomplished.

Yes.

(Though I suppose this is moot at this point, but while we're here) I'll note that of recent there have been a few odd times when attempting to download a #dev build took a long time (a lot of retries) before it finally started coming down. And at the same time, an install attempt was recognized right away.

I had thought that there might be another announcement, so will mention the apparent site failure on Friday 06 April, from about 0800-0830 UTC, before giving up.

Got logged in successfully. Repeated attempts both to Preview and Submit resulted in:
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

Too many connections [1040]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.
Still just problems with the migration, I hope?
Any end in sight, including that redundant server?

ETA: The question/response/thanks regarding ABE vs. NAT pinning was O/T, and IMHO, distracting from this thread. Split to NS Support, "ABE rule against router NAT pinning", due to guest poster needing guest privilege. Hope that was OK.
