Cannot actually "download" a YouTube Video.

Post by nuncus »

2 Problems I am having:

I. First problem:

Whenever I attempt to download a video from YouTube, and after I select FlashGot Media, the Fx downloader shows the download as "starting;" but nothing ever downloads.

Here are the steps I am undertaking:

1. Click link that takes me to a YouTube video;

2. Video starts to download;

3. I right click next to the downloading video;

4. I select FlashGot Media;

5. Fx downloader shows that a download is "starting;"

6. But nothing ever actually downloads. The video in fact downloads to the flash player; but the video file itself that the download manager states that it is "starting," never downloads.

After the video downloads to the flash player, however, FlashGot is then able to download, as a SECOND download, the same video file.

What I cannot seem to do is to download the video with FlashGot when I first go to the page containing the link to the video.

What am I doing incorrectly?

Example:

The downlad link from the Fx download manager:

http://o-o.preferred.mia05s03.v5.lscach ... m/videopla
yback?sparams=algorithm%2Cburst%2Ccp%2Cfactor%2Cid%2Cip%2Cipbits
%2Citag%2Csource%2Cexpire&fexp=909519%2C904448&algorithm=throttl

e-factor&itag=34&ip=209.0.0.0&burst=40&sver=3&signature=D7540383

99812EFCE&source=youtube&expire=1333063406&key=yt1&ipbits=8&fact
or=1.25&cp=U0hSSFBRU

The "copy video URL" taken directly from the Flash player itself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... &v=2_PX5L_v_7I

The "copy video URL at current time" taken from the flash player:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... &v=2_PX5L_v_7I#t=112s

-------------------------
-------------------------

II. 2nd problem:

In this instance (see above), I let the video load into the flash player as

much as it was going to do (about 3/4 of the video). Then I

attempted the FlashGot Media selection again.

Note at the outset here that, after I had let the video download

first to the flash player in the browser, I was in fact able to

then use the FlashGot media command in Fx to have FlashGot use

the Fx file download manager to actually download the file; but

this required an entirely separate download from scratch in

FlashGot (i.e., double the download time -- i.e., two separate

downloads: one by the browser into flash player and one by

FlashGot -- i.e., duplicative downloads.)

The Fx download manager actually showed a file downloading. But

it was downloading the file from scratch. Why isn't FlashGot

simply fishing the already downloaded file out of the browser

cache or the flash player cache and simply saving the file? I

am on a very slow connection; and if I want to watch a video, I

really have to download the video file (usually an "FLV" file if

it's a flash video) if I want to actually watch the video; then

I use VLC media player to play the "FLV" video clip

independently of the Adobe Flash player. In other words, as

things now seem to be, I am spending perhaps a half an hour

trying to download the file into the video player, after which,

FlashGot will actually start to download the file pursuant to a

FlashGot media command; but then I have to wait another half

hour or so waiting for FlashGot to download the same file from

scratch from the internet.

Since FlashGot seems to be working otherwise, I just KNOW I am

doing something incorrectly when it comes to downloading a media

file off of YouTube.

FG Log: see below.

Thanks,

Nuncus

FG Log from unsuccessful attempt to download the "FLV" file by simply selecting FlashGot media when I first went to the video clip on the YouTube site page (or at least I "think" this is the log file from the unsuccessful first attempt to download the video initially with FlashGot media command):

Try clearing cookies.

Downloading from cache is determined by the pref, flashgot.media.forceCacheAsFile, so try toggling its value & see what that might or might not do for you.

Dear "therube,"

Thanks.

I did not have a "flashgot.media.forceCacheAsFile" pref in my About:config, so I added it, as a boolean (since you said, "toggle"), and set it to "true" as the first whack.

What I really want to do, however, is be able to go to the web page containing the link to the video clip and initiate the FlashGot media download and NOT even perform the initial download into the flash player inside the browser. I would be content to just be able to initiate the video download with FlashGot media and then just let FlashGot download the video clip in the background. Isn't that the way FlashGot is supposed to behave by default? Should I just close the web page containing the link to the video clip after I issue the FlashGot media command? Would that "force" the download of the video file by FlashGot into a folder of my choice on the HDD?

Thanks,

Nuncus

Me neither, in my current Profile?
Perhaps it either does not exist until created & set as 'False' (is it?)?

Or maybe it is an old, now unused pref that was never purged?

I see (believe) now that you're using Browser Built In rather then an actual download manager?
I see that Browser Built In does do what you describe.
I thought that behavior had been changed, but perhaps not?
