Need suggestions for ABE USER rules.

Post by scooty-cat »

I would like to set up the USER rules on ABE to coinicide with the rule set/security limits of my school's routers.
Currently, I am not on campus. I seem to need to disable ABE at times.
Again, please note I am not into bypassing security, I wish merely to increase my own.

If you post the exact message you get from ABE when you've got problems with your Campus' proxy, I can help you setting up the right rule.

My apologies for the late reply.
Setup: Gateway M275 laptop running Mepis Live CD. The hard drive died.
I usually download the latest version of firefox and run it from the untarred directory.
Firefox settings are: All warnings are enabled. History and cookies are not saved. Javascript limited. Memory allocation for firefox is 50MB. Noscript is enabled.
Ghostery is installed. These are the only add-ons that I am using.

I was at school recently and had to leave. I'm posting my information here so that you will know I am honest about my inquiry.

Since I also need to use public wireless at times, I'd like to know what else I can do to secure my browser along with my system.

No problem, but as Giorgio said, you need to be at school to get the ABE error message and copy/paste it here. Then Giorgio can diagnose the exact rules needed.

Use SSL/TLS encrypted sites as much as possible. See HTTPS FAQ for how NoScript can force an encrypted connection for any site that will support such connections, even if their default address is the unencrypted http. Note that not all sites will accept the encrypted connection.

Another safety feature at public wireless hotspots is to use a Virtual Private Network, or VPN. You can connect securely to your home computer, then transact through it using your own ISP as if you were at home. Or there are tools that provide so-called "gateway" services, where you establish a secure connection to them through the insecure public wireless. They then forward it on in the normal fashion, now that it no longer is available through the public airwaves to anyone with a listening device. Search the Web for these various products, pricing plans, etc.

Other safety tips include updating the very obsolete Firefox 3.5 branch. If you'd like to stay with the 3. branch, as I do, the latest supported version is 3.6.27, though it is not certain for how long the 3 branch will remain supported.

btw, I see that my first message to you was not applicable, and that you are in fact a good-faith user. I hope you understand that spam is a perennial headache for us here, as it is at all forums -- I've banned two users and deleted one spam post in the last ten minutes alone -- so perhaps a bit hyper-vigilant. All is well, and we are good, right? :)

My apologies for the late reply. I have a lot going on with school, projects and a personal life.

I wanted to state that I saw a post on how to set further options just after my original post. That post will be used to help me in most situations.

Mr. Maone, the errors come and go depending on the version of firefox used. It comes and goes. As stated above, things are hectic and I need to remember to post the image/screen capture or to write down the error.

Tom T.: It's all understood, no bad feelings.

Perhaps one of the stickies in NoScript Support , Why must I "Temporarily allow all this page" REPEATEDLY?, would help, especially the real-world example that starts about here, which was posted after your previous post, or is that the one to which you refer?

No need. When the error occurs, open Firefox Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J, or Firefox Tools > Web Developer > Error Console) click "Errors", and copy any red Error messages and paste them here. Also please click "Messages", and post here any messages relating to NoScript, especially ABE-related. Simple copy/paste, no writing, save in a doc until you get a chance to post. Shouldn't need screenshots for ABE messages.

And glad you understood about whatever-it-was. :)
