Speaking of that, I just caught this:

Now it was only momentarily, & the expected softpedia page page did load, but it was there.
(Took me a few times back-arrowing to catch it so I could capture.)

This is the particular Google link:

Code: Select all

Google's probably at fault for this for doing strange stuff when it should simply redirect.

BTW, I guess "gen_204" stands for HTTP Status code 204 generator ("No Content") but when and why redirect to this? The source code of the page might be interesting.

Neither.
Google just started to use a JavaScript redirect in order to track every result you follow.
If NoScript was not installed, you'd just see a blank page (and probably wouldn't notice), but since by default NoScript displays JavaScript redirections as normal links (to help on pages which would work only with JS enabled) you notice the interstitial page as a raw link list.

Given how many ad blocking and script blocking software are mitigating their efforts to use such services as Google Analytics and Google Syndication and so on, they are forcing a scripted redirect so they can HARD grab the link statics because they are handling the actual link. Now this can be defeated with some client side scripting through GM but its messy. At the moment unless you whitelist Google.com to enable scripting on it, this is what you will see when you click on something within Google search results. I also have noticed they are now embedding their "featured" ad link for the site you are asking for BEFORE the non-ad version of the link, so if you click on the first link, chances are you are clicking on the ad not the actual link. So check for that light colored beige backcolor to avoid it, obviously they are tracked.

Its been improved via surrogates, try the more recent build since my last post. It is now almost instant with no loss of performance.
