Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark now working
Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark now working
The "Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark for easy synchronization" feature is not working in Firefox 4.

I can confirm too: backup bookmark (and "[NoScript]" folder as well) is not created. (Firefox 4.0/Ubuntu 10.10)

Yes, it is incompatible with Firefox 4.
On the other hand, if you've got Firefox Sync enabled configuration will be automatically synchronized across multiple devices.
You can also export it manually using the "Export" and "Import" buttons on the NoScript Options panel.

How exactly does this synchronization work? I constantly seem to "lose" previously whitelisted sites, could this be due to the sync? IMO the sync should produce a union of whitelisted sites; if a site has been deemed safe from one of my computers, it is probably safe from every computer. On the other hand, if you've got Firefox Sync enabled configuration will be automatically synchronized across multiple devices.

It currently works like all the other Firefox preferences: they're synchronized as a whole, the last changed wins.uffjohn wrote:How exactly does this synchronization work? This is gonna change in NoScript 3 where permissions will be synchronized in a more granular way (late summer, most likely).

FF Sync is crap. Not only did it duplicate hundereds of folders and bookmarks, it also made some vanish. Now that Noscript that has joined the legion, I may have no use for noScript if it cannot sync.

also FF Sync doesn't sync bookmark keywords...it just ignores it. Why on earth would FF make it a part of the core I do not understand.

Re: Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark now working
I'm also annoyed with this new change.... There should be a way to restore the backup from the bookmark at least once before you shut it down, or at least warn us (maybe you did, I'm unsubscribed to all lists...
But to update FF/Noscript and to suddenly realize that I've lost my backup is seriously frustrating....
Maybe at least start doing an automatic backup feature....
Man, what a pain....

Re: Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark now working
Ok, so maybe I found a work around?
My situation- Had noscript backed up through a bookmark. No idea what version I was using but was on FF 3.6.8. 'Accidentally' upgraded FF to FF8 (It's a long story, and parts of it I can't explain.) Reloaded all extensions from Mozilla (yeah, I had to do it over). Am re-tweaking all my extension settings, but see that Noscipt no longer offers this option, so I'm ticked, because I HAVE them backed up, but can't use them. Wrote the message above this one.
Ok, but in poking around my bookmarks, I noticed this: The 'description' of the noscript book mark is filled in, and it's really-really (really) long, with long lists of websites. So for fun I exported my current settings in the noscript that was 'clean' and saw that it was a text file, and that the text here as well as the text in the bookmarks>Noscript>description essentially started the same, (possibly they're coded/formatted the same way). So I copied the 'description' from the bookmarks and saved it as a text file. Then I tried to import it from within Noscript and it seems to work!! My whitelist is much longer than it used to be.... My saved settings, probably?
So the questions are- Is this a valid workaround? Did I muck anything up? Is this useful for others?
(Technical 'how to': Find the description of the noscript bookmark in the bookmark list. It should be a pretty long file listing lots of websites (that you have previously whitelisted). Copy that file into notepad and save as a .txt file. Make sure to copy without ANY formatting, as plain text. Delete the text NoScript_Conf#number_here# , so that the file starts with the characters: {"prefs":{ (If you want to see a 'pure' save file, export your current noscript 'situation' and take a look at the file.) Now simply import this new file into noscript through the Import function. Voila!)

Re: Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark now working
Sorry, finding the descriptions can be confusing.... Find it here:
Firefox- Bookmarks ---> Show all bookmarks (or maybe 'manage bookmarks' on older FFs) ----> (Select) Noscript folder -----> (Select) Noscript bookmark ----> "More" -----> And the description box should be there on the bottom.
Enjoy-

Re: Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark now working
Wow, is this still the case?
I have 3 profiles. No wonder my noscript settings do not seem to carry across profiles.
There must be overwriting going on. Is still in the cards for v3?
Thank you!
