[RESOLVED] Noscript strange behavior on different computers

Post by zyrtec »

Hi,

I have a desktop computer running Windows XP Pro and Firefox 7.0.1 plus Noscript development build 2.1.8 RC2. I also have a laptop running windows 7 Pro and Firefox 7.0.1 plus Noscript development build 2.1.8 RC2.

Other than two different operating systems I have the same setup on both computers but Noscript behaves differently on both computers.

On the desktop computer, YouTube.com and Ytimg.com scripts a forbidden by default on Noscript. However, on my laptop, the same Noscript development build 2.1.8 allows Youtube.com and Ytimg.com script to run normally.

I had thought that maybe accident I had granted permissions to Youtube and Ytimg on the laptop so I went ahead and re-set the permissions for Noscript on my laptop but even after doing so, Youtube is allowed by default which doesn't happen on my Win XP desktop PC.

Is this a bug or you guys already granted permissions to Youtube and Ymtimg? Why it happens on some computers but on others?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

These two have long been in the default whitelist. It was discovered some time ago that most videos will play without them, though some advanced features, present or future, may not work without them. That discussion is here.

I'll ask Giorgio if he's made any changes to the default whitelist itself, and if so, why they show up on one platform but not the other.

It's just the default whitelist that changed at some point to include Youtube, since having to allow two sources instead than just one for such a popular (and relatively safe) website may be puzzling for newbies.

Your desktop has probably NoScript installed since before this change, and since changes in the defaults don't affect existing installation it was left untouched.
Instead on your notebook you likely installed NoScript more recently, and therefore you got the new default.
When you reset, you get the current default.

Thanks guys for your timely and wise answers. I see now Youtube site should be considered safe if you dared whitelist it.

I'll do a Noscript whitelist re-set on the desktop computer.

Kind regards.

Is it possible that you meant "to include ytimg", as per FAQ 5.3?

No, they've been added together.
