How to know which script to allow? - new feature requested

Post by dpinfo »

I love this add on and I consider it indispensable during nowadays browsing. We need this new feature:
We need to know where a script is active on the page (and maybe what it is doing)! Like a placeholder(sometimes they do appear for flash). Something similar to Add Block, a tag or a selection table with details.
And this is why:
--On many sites there are scripts blocked by default, some of them refer to other sites. Most often it happens when flash video cannot be seen and I try to look what script to enable. In these cases there is no "No Script" placeholder-the movie just does not start. Many times script names do not reveal their purpose, so I try them one by one (temporarily)- which completely expose me to malicious scripts and makes No Script useless. Besides that, it takes minutes to open what is needed.
--There are many other instances when the page does not look right or some info is missing - I have NO idea which script to allow and I spend minutes to choose. Another way is to temporarily allow all page, but in this way I defeat the purpose of having No Script.
Thanks

Example of page:
http://www.realitatea.net/john-f-kenned ... 76218.html
Try to see all the pictures (5) with JFK by clicking on the >> from right bottom of the picture...without using "temp..allow all this page". It would be great to have a tag next to >>, click on it and enable that script, only !!

Look in the Blocked Objects submenu if you don't see a placeholder. Enable the video from there.

(In this case, it's not a movie clip, but a set of stills.)

First shot, realitatea.net.
- but that alone does not do it
- lots of domains populate then NoScript menu
- look them over, & i see realitatea.ro, so ...
Second shot, realitatea.ro
- works.

So this wasn't so bad. (It could have been.)

A lot of domains use affiliated *cdn domains.
So if I run into a site that isn't working, & I see a *cdn, it gets my second shot.

googleapis.com used to be a big one that was not allowed & negatively affected a lot of sites, though googleapis.com is now on the default whitelist.

Some sites do odd things, so at those times the Blocked Objects menu can be helpful, in particular shockwave-flash@http* (if you know you're missing a video clip). Example, Flash Placeholder absent.

I still think we need a feature: SELECT AN ELEMENT to SHOW .... (...which is great in Adblock...to block )
Since then I encountered many other sites that I was forced to enable page temporarily and then Disable most of items one by one...which is kind of ridiculous, time consuming and beats the purpose of having NoScript.

This recent sticky post identifies more than 100 sites that are basically there to serve ads, count hits, etc. You can check your menu items against that list, mark the unnecessary ones "Untrusted", then those will never show up in the main menu again. (They'll be listed when you point to Untrusted, and a new menu opens.)

Eventually. you'll have all of them in there. They won't bother you any more.
I believe that in NS 3.x, coming soon to a desktop near you (we hope), importing entire blacklists will be much easier.

If you'd like to examine the actual script, the JSView add-on gives that capability.
I was forced to enable page temporarily and then Disable most of items one by one.
It's usually faster (and safer) to enable them one by one, starting with the actual site that you're on. And soon you'll recognize the names of the ad agencies, including those not on the linked list. (Feel free to suggest additions.)

Also, see FAQ 1.11:
Starting with version 1.9.9.61, NoScript offers a "Site Info" page which can help you to assess the trustworthyness of the web sites shown in your NoScript menu. You can access this service by middle-clicking or shift-clicking the relevant menu item.
