[CLOSED] Please consider the Down-Arrow a bug and fix :)

Post by smickson »

I love NoScript, but it annoys me that a "down arrow" has to appear to the right of the icon I put on my Firefox navigation bar. Why does the down-arrow need to be displayed? In the screenshot below, I put the other available NoScript icons to the left of the "Main" icon for comparison. The "Temporary" icons do not have down-arrows. They have little time-clocks which differentiate them from the "main" NoScript icon. So the down-arrow is not needed for differentiation from the other NoScript icons. There are many other add-ons that have a drop-down menu resulting from clicking on an icon (i.e., an icon without a down-arrow next to it). So users don't need the down-arrow to know there's a drop-down menu.

Any chance you will create a NoScript icon WITHOUT the down-arrow, Giorgio? Please :)

I'm not Linux-friendly, but my Fx 3.6.22 with latest NS has no down-arrow, and hasn't for so long as I can remember.

Did you go to NS Options > General and check "Open permissions menu when mouse hovers over NoScript's icon", and OK it?
That would make the arrow definitely unnecessary. It's been so long ago that my tired brain doesn't remember whether that removed it, or I just right-clicked the top toolbar, clicked "Customize", and dragged the arrow to the Custom box, thus removing it. Someone less tired ATM can say which, but one way or the other, there is no arrow.

Thanks for the post. I don't want NoScript opening when I hover; I only want it to open when I click. Unfortunately, users that prefer to click are forced to suffer with a "space-wasting" down-arrow next to the icon. This is what I am speaking to. When users uncheck "Open permissions menu when...", don't add a down-arrow to the icon.

OK, here's another quick fix, though you may not like it: Remove the top icons completely, or at least the main one, and on Options > Appearance, check
"Status bar icon".
Then you won't have the down-arrow, and can set to open only on click.

In any event, this isn't a "bug", which is a flaw that causes a program not to work properly. This is a matter of personal taste, which is fine. Whether Giorgio decides to add that option is up to him, but on the priority scale, surely you'd agree it is well below dealing with new threats, keeping up with new browser versions, fixing actual bugs, and adding feature enhancements for which there is widespread demand? (like the "hover" option, which in fact took me a bit of time to get used to, but it does save clicks.)

I'll ask Giorgio to give you a definitive answer. Thanks.

WONTFIX.
The arrow is a useful hint to tell that this button drops down a menu on left-click (and if you configure NoScript to allow top level sites on left click, the arrow itself becomes the specific click target triggering the menu).

At any rate you can kill the dropmarker by using Stylish or userContent.css to install this chrome-level CSS:

Code: Select all

#noscript-tbb > dropmarker { display: none !important }

Giorgio beat me to it but I was going to say are you kidding me, get over it. Its just fine and IMHO should NOT be fixed. I am glad Giorgio agrees and he was much kinder than me for providing you the tweak to get rid of it, wow such wasteful criticisms with what more important things that need to be done.
