Parallel loading problem with NS 2.1.0.3 & Fx 4.0.1

Post by mkalen »

Greetings board,
I am long-time happy user of NoScript and this is the first time ever I have run into a problem with this great extension.

Since upgrading my O/S to Kubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) and Firefox 4.0.1, NoScript will stall Firefox start-up leading to a performance halt and increased start-up time from ca. 5 seconds without NoScript to ca. 40-45 seconds (!) with NoScript 2.1.0.3 or 2.1.0.4rc5.

I have played around with my start pages and it seems that parallel loading of 2-3 Google apps causes this (see detailed info below).

I have tried to disable everything else, to isolate the problem to NoScript and I can successfully reproduce with NoScript as the only enabled extension and/or plug-in.

I would be happy to test flipping some switches in the NoScript settings, if advised to do so, to be able to track down why this occurs.

Details from my setup:

Code: Select all

Start time with NoScript: ca. 5 seconds.
Start time without NoScript: ca. 40-45 seconds. CPU usage is low during wait (~5%).

Disabling XSS cleaing and/or ABE WAN IP makes no difference.

O/S: Kubuntu 11.04

$ lsb_release -a
 Distributor ID: Ubuntu

$ which firefox
 /usr/bin/firefox
$ ls /usr/bin/firefox
 /usr/bin/firefox -> ../lib/firefox-4.0.1/firefox.sh
$ /usr/lib/firefox-4.0.1/firefox.sh -v
 Mozilla Firefox 4.0.1

Any thoughts on this? I don't feel safe surfing unprotected again after having had the confidence of NoScript for years! :)

I may have the same problem or a related one; about:blank is PERHAPS being blocked when Firefox starts. I'm running the latest Firefox, Noscript, and Windows XP. The Noscript icon visible on the Firefox toolbar says the current url is blocked, but the first menu choice underneath is <block about:blank>. If I click that menu choice, the icon is unchanged, but the first two menu choice become <Temporarily block about:blank> and <Allow about:blank>. If I then click <Allow about:blank>, the Noscipt toolbar icon changes to the unadorned S (for Safe) and the <Temporarily allow all this page> toolbar icon is greyed out.

Because of timing, I think the glitch is Noscript rather than Firefox, but the case is dependent on my memory.

What's up?

Sorry, but I think my phrasing misguided you. My problem is that Firefox stalls/"hangs" while trying to load multiple pages at once during start-up. I have edited out the word "block" in my original post in order not to confuse others - thanks for catching this.

I think you should better open up a new thread for your issue. NoScript blocking is not involved in my case.

Cheers,
