site only works if "allow scripts globally" is selected

Post by corby »

Hello,

I use a particular website that will not work unless I set noscript to "allow scripts globally". Using "allow all this page" doesn't work.

To see the problem, please visit this site: http://www.rgj.com/section/OPED and then look click on the "view comments" of any of the posted articles. The comment section doesn't work unless "allow scripts globally" is selected. (Just so you know, the site is a local newspaper)

BTW, Adblock plus must also be turned off for the comments section to work. So, whatever this site is doing, requires adblock plus to be turned off and NoScript to allow all scripts.

Is there another noscript setting I might be missing to get this page to work without allowing scripts globally?

What a horrid site (for figuring out what you have to Allow) for the comments to appear.

You don't have to actually Allow Globally.
You just have to Temporarily Allow All about a zillion times.

I have no idea which site or combination of sites is actually needed - or why?
Only feasible action is to Allow Globally.

Sure would like to know what you need on that site so that you don't have to Allow Globally!?

And it changes too.

Even after Temporarily Allowing All a zillion times, a page refresh may or may not then display comments.

So one time you may get comments, the next time not.

Like it checks for pairs of domains (some, many ?, of which may be ad domains) or something like that. And if both are not Allowed - at the same time, no comments?

Yes, it's a horrible site.

It's got me baffled. At first, I thought it just wouldn't work on Firefox because I had tried allowing all. Then someone showed me the site working fine.....they didn't have Noscript. When I discovered that both Noscript and Adblock plus had to be disabled to get it to work, I tried to narrow down the settings. For Adblock it was easy to allow the whole site.

I tried looking at the source code of the site and couldn't figure it out. For now, I just AllowGlobal while visiting the site.....I hope it's safe!
