Switching DLM's

Post by KrazdKiller »

i am currently running getright with flashgot. i have recently run into a minor issue with how it interacts with a plugin on one forum i got to. getright keeps trying to download the you've got mail mp3 from the site. i have turned off the verbal notification for new mail, but decided since getright has not been kept up for years that it was time that i find a new dlm to work with flashgot. i have orbit download manager in firefox working great with flashgot in vm. what i would like to know before i uninstall getright in my real environment and replace it with orbit is there any issues that may arise that you know of? i am running the 3.6.13 update of firefox. thanks in advance for any info you may have.

I do like Orbit, but since version 4 they added a dubious "Software Update" module which you may want to switch off.
Otherwise, since you're still in transition, you should probably try Free Download Manager which, at least, is open source.

ok, i appreciate the advice, but my main concern is uninstalling getright. mainly because i know from past experience that even with a uninstaller program getright doesn't always like to uninstall completely, and i want to make sure not of it's current quirky behavior carries over to any new dml i install.

the following is for my reference only. i placed it here for quick reference.

I noticed in this forum that deleting SoftUpdater.dll in "C:\Program Files\Orbitdownloader" stops this "feature". This work-around works great and saved me the trouble of uninstalling and abandoning Orbit Downloader in favor of something that doesn't work nearly as well.

I've also noticed that since removing this "feature", the Orbit Downloader package launches much faster.

After uninstalling, you should just double check that no GetRight-related item is present in Tools|Add-ons, either in the Extensions or in the Plugins tab.

ok, looks like getright played nice this time. i only have one file left to remove and i have it set to be deleted on next reboot, otherwise it is locked even when i take ownership. i tested orbit and no probs with flashgot seeing it and offering it to me as a choice for downloading my file. now i see if removing the one dll does fix the updater or not.
