Feature request: download mp4 from YouTube

Post by sergerus »

flv is ugly format for saving. Many external downloaders (like keepvid.com) provides format choice: flv, mp4 (high quality). I think downloading video in better quality is good feature.

FlashGot is not a downloader or a sequencer, therefore no way to offer you anything more than it finds. Maybe choose a downloader to use in conjunction that has that feature.

It appears keepvid is converting (transcoding) the source FLV to MP4 (or whatever you may choose).

The problem I see is that the the resultant file will be a lessor quality then the source file.

If YouTube or others also host an MP4 version, then yes it may be preferable to grab that rather then the FLV.

(FLV is often quite bloated compared to say an AVI source of the same.)
OK, scratch that.

Looks like YouTube does host both FLV & MP4 versions of the same file.

Yes, it would be worthwhile if FlashGot Media could pick up on the MP4 version too.

(I wonder if one version is not in fact an original source & the other transcoded?)

If the file is already available and not needed to be coded, then that's something UnPlug should be able to find. FlashGot has been great for harvesting large number of links for sending to the downloader but it has never been able to "FIND" the direct link to media for me and I never expected it to.

But it does & it should (in most cases), FlashGot Media.
FlashGot Media (menu or Ctrl-F7) - it's enabled only when a streaming video or audio clip is playing in the current browser tab: this command intercepts downloadable addresses of the content pieces played so far in the page and sends them to the download manager. Tested on Youtube movies, it should work in many other situations as well. Furthermore, when a video or audio content is intercepted and ready for FlashGot media, a status bar icon flashes as a notification: you can either left click it to download all the streams at once, or right click to choose among multiple streams, if more than one have been found.
What it does not do on YouTube is find the MP4 version of the file.

Interesting, I guess I have resigned myself to a certain use of FlashGot that doesn't require that need, so I am sorry I didn't know but I was under the impression that it wasn't designed to that as it never has for me. Thank you for pointing that out, I will try and test it a bit in that regard and see what it does. It might eliminate my need for UnPlug if it does it as well.

OK, looks like if a particular clip is available in other formats (& supposed qualities), those options are presented to you.

This page, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRNTKld-MVg.

Note the HQ button. Initially the stream plays as FLV. Pressing the HQ button loads the MP4 stream.
At that point, MP4 is then seen by FlashGot Media & then can be successfully downloaded.
