Cannot run Firefox 3.6.8 with NoScript 2.0
Cannot run Firefox 3.6.8 with NoScript 2.0
I had recent updates to Firefox 3.6.8 and NoScript 2.0, and suddenly I cannot not load ANY pages -- the page load never completes. I did some troubleshooting by turning off all Add-ons and themes, then found that enabling NoScript causes the problem. I cannot determine if there is any particular NoScript setting I should change, but did not have this catastrophic problem with earlier versions. Now I cannot run Firefox at all unless NoScript is disabled. This makes me unhappy because I really like NoScript's features. Is there some configuration problem that I can fix to get past this problem?

Please try Standard Diagnostic (keeping NS enabled) to rule out a possible extensions conflict.
If that doesn't help, please try NoScript Options|Reset, possibly after Exporting your configuration for further analysis and/or restore.

Re: Cannot run Firefox 3.6.8 with NoScript 2.0
Thank you for the advice -- I did try disabling all of the plug-ins and extensions, one by one, and still had the page loading problem with NoScript enabled. I also tried creating a new Firefox profile -- since that starts FF from scratch with no extensions and without the preferences and data accumulated under my old profile. Running under the new profile, I installed just the NoScript add-on, and immediately had the page loading problem. So could this be a problem with Firefox files or something else like my firewall/antivirus? I use the Eeye Blink anti-virus security software on my home laptop that has the problem.
I did verify that NoScript 2.0 works fine with Firefox 3.6.8 on my desktop and laptop PCs at work, but I do not use Blink there (following company policy,Symantec used) and those machines don't have the large software set that I have on my home laptop. This makes it hard to sort out the problem.
Any other suggestions for troubleshooting would be most welcome.

If you revert to an earlier version, does it work: http://noscript.net/feed ?
Or update to the lastest: development build ?

Also please try to disable your personal firewall temporarily.
If it works, check its logs because it's probably upset by the LAN activity generated by this feature.
If there's still no clue, you may want to try disabling the aforementioned feature the way explained in the article above.

Re: Cannot run Firefox 3.6.8 with NoScript 2.0
OK, disabling ABE in NoScript 2.0 did not help. Neither did turning off the Blink firewall. So I uninstalled NoScript 2.0 and used the link provided to the NoScript archives to get back to an earlier version, NoScript 1.10. Interestingly, a message popped up saying that NoScript 1.10 was incompatible with Firefox 3.6.8. But NoScript was NOT disabled when I looked in the Add-on list. So I tried clicking around, and page loading is now fine -- even with ABE turned on. I have left NoScript 1.10 in place for now.
This is curious -- is the old version in fact incompatible with the new FF (at least as configured on my laptop), as the message said? Will I be left behind if I leave the old version in place?

Yes you will.dwalters wrote:Will I be left behind if I leave the old version in place?
Could you check whether the problem persists with latest development build?

No, the developmental version behaves the same way for me as the released NoScript 2.0. I put back version 1.10, and once again that works on my system.

Re: Cannot run Firefox 3.6.8 with NoScript 2.0
I'm on Firefox 3.6.10 (on Windows Vista with 3070 MB of RAM), and I'm still having problems with NoScript 2.0, specifically 2.0.3.3. It slows down everything, from opening new pages, to moving tabs, to even scrolling down. It even seems to make other programs slower, particularly some that also use the internet, such as the IE and Safari browsers, and MySQL Workbench Beta.
Like some others commenting here, I'm staying with 1.10 for the foreseeable future. You can get it from http://noscript.net/getit and look for "legacy", and that will get you to a link to download 1.10. The direct link is: https://secure.informaction.com/downloa ... t-1.10.xpi -- but using "getit" is easier to type.
One factor in my problem is that I have about 25 pages open, many with multiple tabs. The Private Working Set for FF is typically 500,000 to over 1,000,000 K, but the latter figure is from when I first load up after reboot, before the Virtual Memory swaps out a lot of stuff to the disk. I also use over 200,000 K for plugin-container.exe
I hope NoScript gets their act together. It is really difficult to use, but the added security is worth it!

NoScript cannot interfere in any way with programs outside your browser.Josh-Levin@ieee.org wrote:It slows down everything, from opening new pages, to moving tabs, to even scrolling down. How's the CPU consumption?

If something that uses the web is not acting right, and other things that also USE THE WEB seem to be slow, I do suspect that the former may cause the latter, bu hogging my bandwidth.

Did you try to monitor your TCP connections?Josh-Levin@ieee.org wrote:bu hogging my bandwidth.
BTW, the only NoScript feature which may generate LAN traffic (by pinging your own router on its WAN interface) is ABE's router protection. You can try disabling it and check whether your specific router configuration is causing it to slow down your networking.
