zero size downloads

Post by yodar44 »

ever since some recent noscript updates, i'm having trouble downloading from some sites.
eg. when i click the link to download any of the versions of rkill from http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair- ... -the-week/ i get a zero size file in my sandbox folder.
i'm running sandboxie 3.42; xp pro sp3; FF 3.5.8
the downloads work fine in opera 10.10 also running sandboxed.
the links at technibble download from bleepingcomputer. is noscript's XSS prevention causing this?
is there some setting i change to fix this?

I'm unable to reproduce this problem. From http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair-tool-of-the-week I clicked rkill.exe and allowed the download. (I was prompted by either Windows or Firefox as to whether I wanted to download the file. I don't know which is responsible for the prompt.) The 355 KB file was downloaded into the sandbox.
I'm running sandboxie 3.44; xp pro sp3; Fx 3.6
NoScript 1.9.9.53 with its default settings and no other extensions.

Sorry, I don't know why you're having a problem. Does the problem persist in Firefox safe mode? (Don't check any of the safe mode boxes, just click Continue in Safe Mode.) Does the problem persist in a test profile that has only NoScript installed?

a couple of things i forgot to mention: i'm running firefoxportable and i'm running it under dropmyrights.
i did try it in safe mode, and without dropmyrights, still has the same problem.
i guess i don't know how to create a separate profile.

That said, Firefox -safe-mode disables NoScript completely. Since your problem persists in Firefox -safe-mode, it isn't caused by NoScript. Perform the Basic Troubleshooting procedure.

By the way, I've never used Firefox Portable. So I'll download and run version 3.5.8 to see if I can get any insight into your problem. If I find anything out, I'll post back in this topic.

ok, i got 2nd profile done. i had not installed the portableapps menu so it took some time to figure that out so i could access the other profile.
using the 2nd profile, i get a different problem: now when i try to download, the FF download manager gives the message: canceled--bleepingcomputer.com.
btw, i had to use opera to download the 2nd profile and menu installers from portableapps .

I'm unable to reproduce this problem in Firefox Portable 3.5.8 either.
sandboxie 3.44; xp pro sp3; Firefox Portable 3.5.8
NoScript 1.9.9.53 with its default settings and no other extensions.

We've already determined that NoScript isn't the problem. Check out the Firefox Portable support forum.

ah ha! my problem with zero size files in FireFox downloads has been explained, but not fixed, yet. Steve Gibson's latest 'security now' podcast says it is caused by locking down the internet zone in IE. he has not yet identified the cause of the interaction, but expects to figure it out by next week's podcast.
