So any idea how I can get either FlashGot to work or Firefox to accept it?

Well, you can try to reinstall Firefox, but I don't hope much out of it.
Using a clean profile should always work, but if it doesn't for you I'm afraid you've got something broken at the filesystem level.
Are your permissions on the profile directory OK?
Are you using any special security software/sandbox?
I'm running out of ideas... as I said, clean profiles should always work and always did so far.

No nothing special for security. I think I will totally uninstall Firefox and then reinstall it. the only thing I will keep are my favorites. maybe that will work. Wish me luck. I will let you know how I make out. It will take a couple of days. I have to make sure the wife and kids do not want to use the computer as soon as I walk away from it lol.

An email I just received:
Well, I did all that, created a new profile, etc. It still didn't work! But i then thought that my internet security could be causing it. I use Kaspersky Internet Security and i noticed that there was a Kaspersky plugin already installed. So i disabled it, tried installing Flashgot, and everything was fine.
