Problem Installing NoScript

Post by buttoni2 »

I'm setting up a new Win7 pc with four user accounts: 1 admin acct, 2 limited accounts and a guest account. Today I installed Noscript, as I have always done and is installed fine to the admin account. I configured the options as I have always done. Then I tried to install it to the two limited accounts and kept getting:

"Firefox could not install the file at HTTPS:/addons.mozilla.org/downloads/file/73111/noscript-1.9.9.27-fx+sm+fn.xpi?src=api becaus: Signing could not be verified. -260"

Repeated attempts got me nowhere. I wondered if I had changed some Options feature that could have caused this to happen, but just really didn't think that was the case. Then later on this evening, just on a whim, I tried to set up the Guest account and Noscript installed correctly!!! I asked over at the FX Support forum on Mozillazine how I might resolve my dilemma and they said the file may have been corrupted during download on the 2nd & 3rd shots perpahs due to my av? (Avast) Anyway, the two helpers on the other forum said the install copy is not matching the copy in the META-INF file? All that is pretty much over my head. But it seems odd it would install on two of the accounts and not the other two, one that was done AFTER the two unsuccessful attempts. Truly strange, no?

What recommendations would you make? New FX profiles for the two accounts that won't install it right? Deleting some history of it somewhere in FX? Or reinstalling FX from scratch (ugh) and setting up four new profiles all over again?

Try installing the latest development build from noscript.net and see if that has the same error.

This probably means that you deleted the "UTN-USERFirst-Object" root certificate from your security certificate repository (or that you can't access it, but that would mean you couldn't open any SSL website).
Try to create a new profile and copy back in yours the cert8.db and key3.db files.

Thank you both for the input. I had to run down and pick up my 85 y.o. mother in San Antonio and was out of town overnight. Well, I didn't delete the indicated root certificate. It's still on my listing. I will try Computerfreaker's suggestion and see what happens. The odd thing is that FX was able to successfully install NoScript on the Guest account AFTER rendering the error message on the other accounts. That's what I find so odd.

Well, I just now tried to install the "latest development build" at the given link, Computerfreaker, and no go. Got the same error message.

Giorgio, I am able to go to other SSL sites including my banking site without problems just fine. Just tested that out, too. So I don't think accessing that certificate you mentioned is the problem.

I'm really stumped on this one. Maybe I should just reinstall FX and NoScript all over again. Hate to have to reconfigure four user accounts, but if you guys don't see any other options I could try, that may be my only recourse.

Hope you had a wonderful holiday. I anxiously await any last thoughts before I jump in and uninstall/reinstall FX and NoScript.

I did a web search and found somebody (several people, in fact) with the same problem as you (although for different addons): http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_fo ... &forumId=1

Here's the relevant stuff:
Tim wrote:For me it was getting through the proxy at work. The standard proxy did not work, but I switched to another and it worked fine.

Hope one of these tips works for you!

Thanks for finding that thread. Glad it's not just me. :) I'm just learning Win7 and still "fumbling in the dark", but I did a Start, Search on META-INF and *.XPI and am finding no such files/directories on my new pc. Didn't see them using Explorer looking around in the Mozilla Firefox folder in Program Files X86 directory either. Do you know the path I would navigate to on a Win7 system to get at this META-INF directory? Would love to delete it if I could only FIND it. ;)

XPI is the file extension for Firefox addons; you ordinarily won't find any on your system, since Fx downloads them & promptly uses, then deletes, them.

You'll need to download NoScript with IE, Chrome, Safari or some other browser (or just right-click the "Add to Firefox" button and hit "Save as..."); then rename NoScript.xpi to NoScript.zip. Extract it and delete the META-INF folder, then re-compress the addon folder and rename it to NoScript.xpi. Open Firefox and drag-'n'-drop your recompiled NoScript.xpi onto it; install as usual.
Note: I haven't tried this with NS as I've been rather busy trying to track down a bug in one of my apps, so there might not even be a META-INF folder inside the NS XPI...

I tried it for you. :)
I downloaded noscript-1.9.9.27-fx+sm+fn.xpi from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722. It does contain a META-INF folder. I opened the file with 7-Zip, right-clicked the META-INF folder and selected Delete. Closed 7-Zip. Dragged the modified noscript-1.9.9.27-fx+sm+fn.xpi onto the Firefox window and proceeded with the installation.

Of course it works for me even if I don't delete the META-INF folder, but I'm glad we have a workaround for buttoni.

I've never installed anything this way inside FX before. When I drag the recompressed folder named Noscript.xpi to the Mozilla window, I get the little window that says "You have chosen to open noscript.xpi compressed folder. What should FX do with this file?" The only choice is to open with Explorer, so I browsed to and selected to Open With Mozilla Firefox (since I assumed that is what I needed to do), but that just opens up a blank tab in my browser. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for trying that for me, Alan. I, too found the meta-inf folder and deleted before recompressing. But I guess I just don't know how to install this way, as you can see by my last post.

Thanks for doing that! Getting buttoni up and running should be pretty easy... I had forgotten 7-Zip doesn't need to uncompress a file to modify it, so we can simplify matters now.

Get 7-Zip or 7-Zip Portable and install it. Then, in 7-Zip, browse to the folder containing your NoScript XPI; double-click the XPI. There should be a META-INF folder inside; delete that and close 7-Zip. Drag the modified XPI into Firefox and the usual addon installation dialog should come up. Install NS as usual...

Thanks ever so much for bearing with me and my lack of knowledge on what is undoubtedly a simple task. Sorry I'm such a newbie at installing things in FX this way, CF. But when I drag the modified file onto the FX window, it just asks what do I want to open with, to which I reply "Firefox" and it just opens up a blank new tab page......no further install dialog box comes up for me. I've got to be doing something wrong. Should I be opening it with something else?

FWIW I'm on a brand new Win7 64 bit system.

TA DA!!!! It worked finally, guys. Just deleted all my copies, d/l'd a fresh copy, deleted META-INF and dragged it into the window again. This time IT WORKED! A thousand thank yous to Alan and Computerfreaker for being patient with me. And you too, Giorgio. Thanks again. This retired teacher learned something new today! Never too old to learn something new! Best wishes for a prosperous NEW YEAR to all of you. You folks are much appreciated.
