RFE: Notifications or subscription to dev builds

However, being not hot-wired to the Net 24/7 like most 12-yr.-olds today ;) , and since there's not a notification system, I have to remember to check for them. I suppose I could use that service that checks page changes and notifies you when it changes, and subscribe the Changelog page to it. Or perhaps Giorgio could write a simple little script that whenever the changelog page is updated, email notifications are sent to the team members, just as with topic replies.

Also, perhaps some users would like the opportunity to subscribe to an email notification of new dev builds available.

Just my opinion, but not for me.

I & my browser quite well know http://noscript.net/getit#devel & http://flashgot.net/getit#devel

They are all listed right there along with pertinent information. That's all I need.
If that were not the case, then my opinion would change.
(In which case I would ask for a http://noscript.net/getit#devel & http://flashgot.net/getit#devel ;-).)

My browser knows it quite well, too. What Guardian and I were saying is that you have to keep checking constantly, which is time-consuming, but if you don't, you miss out. The requested feature means no time spent in repeated fruitless checking, or in checking at all, for that matter.

If implemented, surely you could opt out, or it could be on an opt-in basis: As mentioned, some users who like to try dev builds might like this feature, also. So opt-in is fine with me.

Doesn't the RSS feed fit the bill?

It surprised my that 1.9.9.11 wasn't in the feed. There normally is a delay before FF automatically picks up released versions of NS and when it is available directly on the downloads page.

The feed linked above is the one for the development builds channel only.
Latest stable builds are listed at http://noscript.net/feed.

I've been subscribed to these two feeds for months. I've always received timely notification for all NoScript builds and releases. Thank you, Giorgio.

I never use RSS feeds and doubt their safety, but if that's the only option, then I guess things stay as is.

Please note that Guardian supported this RFE also, so he must have his reasons for not using the RSS feed. Although it appears that the decision has been made anyway, perhaps he'll share them with us.

Guardian?

Guess that's three of us who don't care for RSS, for whatever reason. So checking the links on some occasional basis remains the only way to find out.

Thanks for your time and reply, Giorgio.

I apologize for not commenting earlier, I have been dealing with some health issues. Let me try to make sure I get everyone here, forgive me if I associate the names wrong, I read quickly.

@Giorgio: yes the RSS is quite well in showing it and in fact I have it on my favorite RSS reader and I check often. (every 15-30 minutes on a good day) but unfortunately when I am stretched, stressed or just plain ol overwhelmed, I only limit myself to checking my email and replying to anything I have participated and getting notification but new posts, releases and all that gets missed until I actually use my browser to check and get caught up on my RSS. Let me tell you honestly that I was unable to check my RSS and thankfully it keeps track of all posts, even after they are no longer on the feed, why I use it so I don't miss anything, I had over 2869 posts that waiting for me this morning. As you can see from the pletura of posts i have made in the last hour, I have been going through it and reviewing, replying to those relevant, just acknowledging and making mental note on the rest and here we are me writing this post.

@therube, @Alan: I also have the links and they are sufficient when I am fully caught up and active but if I get a day or so behind, the email is my best way to know something changed while I was gone. Yes, the world continued to revolve without me and will continue to do so without ever missing me after I am gone, at least I get to know some change happened and in the meantime if I am using my browser for anything quick here and there, I know that I should probably grab the update first.

I will say that this is perhaps a selfish need to stay informed, maybe an overzealous dedication to my duty to support the software, whatever the case, it is a nice to have feature that if not a great burden to the man, I would appreciate. Otherwise, I will use what has been generously provided and keep my mouth shut and be grateful. I just felt that some things are time sensitive fixes and given a scenario, very real for me, it would help to have this added layer. Thank you all for considering this and discussing it. I wish I had gotten as much traffic and attention on my other recommendation ;)

EDIT: @Tom: almost forgot to say that RSS is quite safe if you use it properly and have the right tools and give Brief a shot for inside Fx and I can recommend a few others for stand-alone if you like. Brother, it makes your life quite a bit easier for me at least and it might be an acquired taste but don't avoid it for fear of security, avoid it only if you don't need it. Being as attentive to detail as you are, you might appreciate the control it gives you and thoroughness.

I don't need it.
http://www.changedetection.com/monitor.html would do the job; just set it to notify when http://noscript.net/changelog changes.
It will send an e-mail notification. Just thought it would be nicer and faster to have it come directly from the source, without involving a third party.

If there is not strong support from others, the RFE can be marked closed.
