How to turn off acknowledgement of NS update being applied

Post by PatrickB »

I installed NoScript on my wife's computer months ago. The issue is that NS is updated frequently, so there are frequently prompts to accept an update when Firefox is being restarted. Since she is a computer novice, prompts like these worry her.

NoScript automatically downloads an updated version while Firefox is open. The next time Firefox is opened -- prior to the main FF screen appearing, there is a prompt notifying that a new NS version is waiting to be applied. The user must make a decision to apply the update now or not.

Is there a way to automatically accept the update so that NoScript can be kept current without the user needing to make that decision?

My alternative would be to set the updates for NoScript to be applied manually so that my wife does not need to determine if the update is necessary. That would result in lesser security and in my needing to manually apply the updates.

Thank you,

PatrickB

Hi Patrick,
there's currently no way.
However I'm looking if it can be made possible with a preference in a future version.

Understandably. How is she supposed to know for sure it's legit? You and I know that it is, but I wouldn't want her to feel like she has to make that kind of decision: one where a wrong "OK" can lead to a successful computer attack.

I'm pretty sure there isn't.

I think we'll have to settle for this alternative. You may already know how to do this, but just in case you don't, here's what to do.
- Disable automatic extension update by unchecking Tools > Options > Advanced > Update > Installed Add-ons.
- Periodically (weekly?) check for extension updates manually with Tools > Add-ons > Find Updates

Since I'm an extension troubleshooter, I wind up doing it manually like that once a day. It works just fine.

@Giorgio Thank you. That feature would be very useful in this situation

@Alan - I could make that change to manual in Firefox, but the NS FAQ shows a change to manual just for NoScript. That may be better for some that read this thread later.

NoScript is an important part of my Internet security. Other add-ons I feel are necessary, especially with online shopping and banking:

Thank you for pointing out how to turn off just NoScript automatic update attempts. Indeed, that may be useful to others who read this topic. I imagine you will want to turn it off for all your extensions through the Firefox options as I described, otherwise your wife will still have the same problem when updates are available for your other extensions.

I will just leave NS set to manual downloading for now. The other Add-Ons rarely have updates so I have less of a need to disable updating of all Add-Ons. NoScript is worth the effort!

Thank you,
