Links to same-site PDFs opening in wrong frame

Post by Andrew Fisher »

The site http://www.coastswimming.org.uk/ has three frames, a "top" frame with the club name and logo, a "left" frame containing a menu, and a "middle" frame with the main content. Several of the menu items (e.g. "COAST Committee") contain links to PDF files. Although these have a target of "middle", when I click the link with NoScript enabled I get the PDF place-holder in the "left" frame and can click through to get the PDF document itself in the left frame. If I disable NoScript the PDF opens fine in the "middle" frame.

I am using Firefox v3.5.3 and NoScript 1.9.9.03

I seem to have misplaced my Flash drive with Fx 3.5+ portable on it, but FWIW, I have no trouble at all with this site with Fx 2.20, no permissions granted.
When I click "Coast Committee", I get a prompt, "Open, or save to disk". Click "open", and the pdf opens immediately, consuming the entire screen (no frames). No further clicks required. Close the pdf, and it goes back to the site as normal.

Aside from a possible difference in F2 vs F3, I also use Foxit pdf reader instead of Adobe. (It's 1/100 the size, and much safer.) I don't know if that makes a difference, either.

Perhaps someone can reproduce the problem with F3, or I'll find that flash drive. Sorry that I couldn't reproduce the problem at the moment.

In Fx 3.5.3 I've confirmed the problem is as the OP described, but I was waiting for Giorgio to reply with any suggestions for changes that could be made to the web site's coding. From the user's side, it's sufficient to whitelist coastswimming.org.uk with Allow or Temporarily Allow.

Looks like a bug, investigating.

SeaMonkey 1.1.18.

If coastswimming is NOT allowed, the COAST Committee pdf opens in the same (small) frame where clicked.
If coastswimming is Allowed, the COAST Committee pdf opens in the larger (middle) frame.

Code: Select all

<a href="club/coast_coaches.pdf" target="middle">Coaching Team</a>
Oh, & also, for it to open in "middle", Apply these restrictions to trusted sites too must be unchecked.

Further note, that with coastswimming Allowed, & with Apply these restrictions to trusted sites too unchecked, NoScript is not obeying the Forbid Adobe Flash setting. You get no placeholder, the Flash opens immediately regardless.

OK, found that flash drive. It hid under the sofa cushion -- I hate it when they do that. :D

Anyway, with Fx 3.5.3 Portable, NS Release 1.9.9.01, and Foxit Reader 2.0, I *still* have no problem opening the pdf, *without* allowing any scripting or plugins from coastswimming. It opens full-page, but of course you can re-size the pdf window to any size you like, so that you can still view the rest of the web page.

I suspect some difference in function between Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader. But then, if you need 367 Mb to make a tool to open pdfs, that's an awful lot that can go wrong, no?

I believe that's got it.
(Running sandboxed & had to download Foxit's plugin so I could view in browser.)
It opens full-page
What do you mean by that?
Are you opening it externally, or in the browser window itself (via the plugin)?

This is SeaMonkey 2 & Foxit 3.1 + plugin.
(Earlier was SeaMonkey 1.1.18 & Adobe plugin. Similar results earlier, though now it's working correctly.)

Ahh, mystery solved.
I've never had either plug-in, as I saw no need for it, since the method described above has always worked fine so far. IMHO only, the fewer plug-ins, the better. YMMV.

Success. With default settings and whitelist, the placeholder and subsequent pdf display are displayed in the middle frame now, as intended. Allowing coastswimming.org.uk is no longer necessary.
