Disabling restrictions not working

Post by Blorvis »

I've recently upgraded to Mac's Monterey OS, and deleted and reinstalled Firefox. I have the latest NoScript installed. I have recently been unable to permanently disable restrictions on most sites that I visit. The sites are pretty random, but numerous. I don't know what other information would be helpful in resolving this issue. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Glenn Rice

Do you mean that you don't have the permanent TRUSTED button enabled?
In that case it may mean you're using private windows only, where saving per-site settings is forbidden by browser's policy.

No, I have never used the disable restrictions globally option. I'm very certain that I'm not using a private window. Thanks for your quick response, I'm one of those people that never seems to have a routine issue.

Sorry, we still don't understand. "permanently disable restrictions" meaning...what? What restrictions and how specifically are you trying to disable them?

My apologies. I'm not not at all technically literate about these things. Sorry for it's length, but I'll try this way. On my Firefox toolbar, there is a round white button with a large blue "S" within it. When clicked, a menu of buttons appear, among them, a blue "S" with an exclamation point next to it, a grey box with an exclamation point within it, a clock with an exclamation point beside it, and a clock with a "no" symbol next to it. The button I'm concerned with is the grey box with the exclamation point. Hovering over it reveals it's function as "Disable restrictions for this tab." In the past, this would permanently allow the site to function normally if I needed to use features in it that NoScript blocked. This action, rather than disabling the restrictions permanently, now only functions once and I have to click it every time, just like the "temporary" button next to it does. This is different than in the past, and this is what my concern is about. Again, I suspect that downloading the Monterey OS for my Mac might be responsible. I hope that I haven't tried your patience too much, I'm not very good at this, but your help is deeply appreciated. I am very happy with your product, and tell this to everyone I know!

"Disable restrictions for this tab" has never been permanent, and it only does exactly what it says - disable restrictions for the tab, i.e. everything that gets loaded in that tab, and only what's loaded in that specific tab, gets a full green light from NoScript's permissions. It does not persist if you quit Firefox. It does not care about sites and does not apply on a per-site level in any sense.

You could have the exact same webpage loaded in two different tabs, one "Disable restrictions" and one normal, and the two tabs would still have different permissions.

Clear now? :)

Sounds to me like your Mac OS upgrade fixed your NoScript to behave as intended.

OK.Thank you. But the way it operated in the past where I didn't have to disable NoScript every single time I logged into an often visited site was very convenient. Currently the "Disable restrictions for this tab." button to me, functions the same as the button for "Set all on this page to Temporarily Trusted," because the disable button now is temporary for any single site. Thanks anyway!

Wait, so "Disable restrictions for this tab" now behaves for you like this???

Do you get the same behavior in a new, clean Firefox profile with only NoScript installed and all default settings?

I visited the page you suggested and this very well might be what's going on. I understood hardly any of it due to my lack of literacy in these matters, so it didn't help. I want to disable restrictions on a given site permanently and not have to disable it every time I visit the site. If I'm going to visit a site only once, I use the temporarily lift restrictions button. That I'll have to do every time, and that's OK. Every adjustment that was recommended that I could find doesn't change anything. All my settings are as they should be as I understand them. I believe that it could be related to when I downloaded the Monterey OS for my Mac, but perhaps not. Before the download, it functioned as I described it above. One button was permanent, and one was temporary.
