For older NoScript versions see http://noscript.net/feed?c=200&t=a or ftp://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/722/
Tom T. wrote:Also, Java is listed in about:plugins, as a plugin, and profile\extensions has no "Java add-on". So it does seem as though MZ regards it as a plug-in.
The extension is just a helper, an add-on that can be safely disabled without breaking Java applets. It gets installed globally by copying itself into the global extensions directory of a Firefox installation (The one possibly listed somewhere in the registry? No idea what it does when there is more than one instalation), not the extensions directories in the profiles (and unlike some add-ons it also doesn't get copied there AFAIK). The plugin is what brings the main functionality, what makes it possible to run Java applets in the browser.

Apropos Java, recently some old Java versions got blacklisted for security reasons, it caused quite some uproar, again: http://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2012/04/ ... blocklist/

Thanks to the links provided by dhouwn (much appreciated!) I've been able to more precisely pinpoint when my problems started.

The Flash logo issue with ppradio.dk was introduced with 2.3.3 RC3 and I'm reasonably certain it's due to this bug fix (which apparently has introduced a new bug):
+ [ClearClick] Protection against partial obscuration via Flash objects with OS-native wmode values (thanks David Lin-Shung Huang for reporting)
The crash problem seems to have been introduced with 2.3.6 RC4, since I do not experience any crashes using 2.3.6 RC3.

EDIT: I've now also been able to pinpoint since when the "Forbid Adobe Flash" option on the Embeddings tab had to be unchecked in order to view the Flash logo on ppradio.dk. That was introduced with 2.0.9 RC4. Prior to this version a 100% whitelisting of the site would also show the Flash logo.

I still can't reproduce the ppradio.dk issue on either Fx 2 or Fx 3 (athough in F2, I had to whitelist the site in AdBlock Original, which wasn't supported in F3+).

But since we're at an impasse, and you've identified certain version changes correlated to each issue, I'll escalate this to Giorgio. Thanks for your results.

Also, the link to the version history does *nothing* right. I thought it was supposed to provide links to actual old versions, but even if it's intended to provide a link to the latest stable version, that's wrong, too, as the current stable release is 2.3.7. AMO apparently doesn't have this yet, if you search through their site. I'll let Giorgio know that, too.

@ dhouwn:

I've bookmarked your feed link for the actual .xpi's, and will add a shortcut to it. Thanks for this most welcome contribution. (inside joke. :D )

What you said about Java supports what I said: It's a plug-in, not an add-on. You're welcome for that knowledge. (same inside joke. )

Just wanted you both for helping out. No inside joke, or joke at all... :)

Also thanks a lot for escalating this to Giorgio. I'm sure he more than has his plate full, so I'm not expecting these issues to be fixed soon or, considering the state of FF3, perhaps at all. At least we've pinpointed the origins of the issues pretty well.

You want us *both*? Isn't that a bit greedy? ..... (KIDDING! I knew what you meant. :D )

I just revisited your OP:
The first issue has to do with Flash on whitelisted sites. When I visit www.ppradio.dk, which is a site I've whitelisted, the logo using Flash is blocked. Until v2.3.3 I could bypass this by unchecking "Forbid Adobe Flash" on the Embeddings tab (which has always struck me as odd considering this option is for _untrusted_ sites). ...
Not true. There is a checkbox, "Apply these restrictions to whitelisted sites too" (the wording has changed trivially over the years).

If you checked that somewhere along the way, then *that* is why you needed to uncheck Forbid Flash to avoid the placeholder icon (block-logo).
Should you wish, uncheck that, and that problem, at least, should be fixed.
If not, or if it's already unchecked, that's another useful piece of diagnostic info for Giorgio, thanks.

I've seen that setting but it's not enabled. To follow your previous example I've made a screenshot of the settings, but I cannot insert a link to the image (from ImageShack). Something about triggering the spam filter.

And yes, I'm greedy... :P

I don't know why. I insert links to images from imageshack all the time, and so do others, not just Moderators.

Did you use their "Forum" code to the image itself? For example, see this post.
The code used was

Code: Select all

Does yours follow that format?

Also, sometimes they provide an "alternate code for forums if the above doesn't work".

In any event, you can always post the actual URL link inside code tags, as I did above just to illustrate.
This should prevent triggering any spam filters, and we can copy/paste your URL into another tab to view.

But a link in the above format should be OK.

And this time I seem to have had more luck... :)

Glad the screenshot worked.

I duplicated your Embeddings settings exactly, and whitelisted ppradio.dk.

The Flash object loaded immediately, on both Firefox 2.0.0.20 and 3.6.28.

If you right-click on the page, > View Page Info > Media, do you see the following listed, with "Object" on the right-hand side ("Type")?

Code: Select all

http://www.ppradio.dk/includes/swf/Flashbanner.swf?nocache=17042012103702
The numbers at the end will vary from time to time, as different ad banners are loaded. But the format should be the same.

In any case, I have no idea why I cannot reproduce your issue on either F2 or F3, with your settings. Nor any clue to why you experience this problem.
I'll ask Giorgio once again to look at this when he has a spare minute or two.

Thanks for your patience.

One important piece of the puzzle which seems missing from this thread is the Shockwave Flash plugin version the OP is using (about:plugins).

View Page Info > Media gives me this (with "Forbid Adobe Flash" _checked_):

Code: Select all

http://www.ppradio.dk/includes/swf/Flashbanner.swf?nocache=17042012182348
And I get the following for Shockwave Flash in about:plugins.

Code: Select all

Shockwave Flash

    File name: NPSWF32_11_2_202_233.dll
    Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/x-shockwave-flash Adobe Flash movie swf Yes
application/futuresplash FutureSplash movie spl Yes
Is this as it should be?

Sorry for replying a bit late, but I'm back at work now, so I have to wait until I get home to test things.

This version of Flash is unsupported on your Firefox version.

Well, it works flawlessly _except_ for the NoScript issue. Also, just for kicks I tried to install an earlier version (10.3) which I got redirected to from your first link. It refuses to install. Claims it's too old. Same goes for the versions available via your second link.

Hotmail.

> I just tried "barebacking" Hotmail.

What is that?

> visiting Hotmail with any version of NS higher than 2.3.5 results in a 100% guaranteed crash

Not necessarily so.

Create a new, clean Profile.
Install the current NoScript - only.
Visit Hotmail.

No crash.

Quit FF.

Go into the Profile /extensions/ directory.
Add anything more into that directory. (A DIR > XXX, directory listing suffices.)

Start FF.
Visit Hotmail.
Once you have logged in, & accepted the "you are using an old browser, continue" disclaimer, the Hotmail screen draws, then FF promptly crashes.

Delete said XXX file from the /plugins/ directory.
Restart FF.
Once more it crashes (usually - possibly because a different version of NoScript was staged at the time?).
Restart FF.
This time it should run successfully.

This behavior changed between noscript-2.3.6rc3.xpi & noscript-2.3.6rc4.xpi with rc3 working & rc4 crashing.

That said, appears that after some point, you will get continual crashes.

Would assume that starting anew would right things, even if only for a period of time.

(I think you're fighting a loosing battle.)
