ebay adverts

i have the latest noscript (1.9.1.91) with Shiretoko (firefox) 3.5b4pre. Strangely, today when I signed into ebay, I have an ADVERTISEMENT displayed at the top of the page (between the search bar and the my ebay summary). Looks like a javascript with a flash advert... I can't figure out how to block it with noscript (i dont get any options in noscript to block pn1.ard.yahoo.com nor ads.yimg.com)... Viewing the frame source I'm seeing the following:

I'm sorry that this has gone unanswered in six days. I'll flag it for Giorgio's attention. As a quick fix, though, you could consider one of the many ad-blocking add-ons, like AdBlock or AdBlockPlus, or even the Firefox Tools > Options > Content > "Load images automatically" > Exceptions > and add ard.yahoo.com and ads.yimg.com to the "Exceptions" list. Let us know if this helps. Sorry again for the lack of response.

ahh, i see. thanks. i had a feeling there were alternate ways to block these... i have to say, noscript has made such a positive difference in my browsing experience; it's amazing... I am reminded how amazing every time i sit down at a different pc - one with IE.

The Ebay banner you can see with NoScript enabled is not Flash, but an animated image (no scripting involved).
In facts the site tries to run a Flash banner, but if scripting is blocked switches to the <NOSCRIPT> sections which delivers a static (albeit animated), but however innocuous from a security standpoint, image.
NoScript does not attempt to block any image by default (even though this kind of alternate noscript image are blocked as a side effect if you enable the NoScript Options|Untrusted|Forbid Web Bugs option) because it's a security tool, rather than an ad bocker (no matter if it blocks almost every ad because most of them are delivered through scripting).
If you want to block every ad, you can add the excellent AdBlock Plus extension which has this very purpose and works just fine side-by-side with NoScript.

I would merely add that if you just want to stop images from animating or blinking without completely blocking them, you can type about:config in Firefox address bar.
In the Filter bar, type blink That will bring up browser.blink_allowed. The default is "true". Double-click it to toggle it to "false".
Then in the Filter bar, type animation That will bring up image.animation_mode. Double-click it, and in the dialog box, for "value", type none ,then click OK. Close the about:config window. Done. (you don't need to use boldface. I just did that to highlight the keywords.)

Suggestion: Don't sit down at pc's with IE -- unless they'll let you run Fx and NS on it.

Adblock with the Easy filters will block all eBay ads effectively and completely, in fact I just suggested an element hiding (clean up after the ad is gone) and it was integrated into the filter. I never worry about ads, 99%+ effective rate using several subscriptions and my own mods that might be too restrictive for the public. Glad you got it worked out.

Just to add a different option and opinion, I use AdBlock Original, no subscriptions needed, totally user-controlled, 100% effective at blocking what I tell it to block and letting through that which I don't; never argues with NS. IMHO only, prefer not to leave these decisions to someone else. To each their own!

The subscriptions are optional and available to you but not required. It comes out of the box clean with 100% pure user control, you can choose to link to other database of items or not. It doesn't rely on anyone else unless you want it to and tell it to.

Whereas I found no effect whatsoever with AB Original. My philosophy and mileage, surely different from yours and everyone's else (which makes the world interesting) is that "simpler is better"/"Less is More". The less stuff there is, the less there is to break.
