NoScript and Firefox Sync

Post by Mac »

Giorgio - Just noticed that in v 2.1.0rc3, you added Firefox Sync integration...
v 2.1.0rc3
==========================================================================
+ First shot at Firefox Sync native integration, synchronizes everything
except custom ABE rules
...but how does it work? I didn't see anything in the NoScript options about sync, nor was anything added to Firefox Sync.
I have Firefox Sync setup between 2 computers, but have nothing checked as I was planning on using it solely for this app (I use xmarks for bookmarks).

Thanks for your help & hard work!

It is transparent: as long as you're synchronizing preferences across your devices, NoScript automatically adds its own preferences to the list of those being synchronized.
I'll probably add a switch to turn off this feature before 2.1 final.
However, since Fx 4 by default synchronizes tabs, bookmarks, passwords and preferences, it works out of the box.
In your case instead, you just need to check "preferences" in Sync options.

This is the official and only built-in way to perform automatic NoScript settings synchronization across multiple devices on Firefox 4, where Firefox Sync is built-in.
It works on Firefox 3.6.x too, where Firefox Sync is available as an extension.

For older instructions about synchronizing NoScript settings with legacy Firefox versions, e.g. with XMarks or manually, see this topic.

Sounds good, thanks for the explanation. I'm now setup to sync my preferences, so I'll learn soon enough how this works.

Ho spuntato "Copia la configurazione di NoScript in un segnalibro sincronizzabile", ma non succede niente.
Il Sync di FF 4 funziona dato che i segnalibri sono aggiornati, ma la lista di NoScript no.

Translation:
I checked "Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark for synchronization" but NoScript synchronization doesn't work.
FF4 Sync works good with other bookmarks and preferences.

This option doesn't work anymore on Fx 4.
Just grab latest NoScritp version from http://noscript.net/getit#direct (2.1.0.1 or above) and NoScript's settings will be transparently synchronized with the other Firefox preferences.

The upgrade today killed sync. I had to disable noscript to get sync to work.

Did you get any error message?
Does the log show anything?

Sync was saying it couldn't sign in, but not why. I tried poking around with it, asking it to sign in a couple more times, but to no avail.

Noscript was the only add-on that had had any changes yesterday, so I disabled it and restarted firefox. When I did, sync signed in and was working fine.

Oddly enough, after that, I re-enabled noscript, (because I decided I'd rather do without sync than noscript,) and it continued to work. So I'm not sure what happened there.

It usually means that Mozilla's Sync servers are unavailable or overloaded.
Not surprising, since Firefox 4 (both desktop and mobile) have just been launched and have Sync built-in.

Hmm, true. By the way, it's very nice to see that you respond directly and quickly to things here. It's not often I see that.

Today I added a new Firefox installation to those synced and the empty config overwrote all the others, even if I told Sync to grab everything from the cloud and not merge; I set up Sync before installing Noscript.
Quite annoying for those users that heavily customized NoScript and had all erased.

That's really weird, I've tested this scenario a lot and it should work.
Are you double sure you didn't do the opposite (export current configuration to the cloud)? How did the other preference behave?

Hello,
I'm using XMarks for Bookmark Synchronization across platforms and LastPass for password sync.
Any chance of getting the old bookmark Sync back? I don't want to create just another account with just another sync service if all I need is already set up.

Unfortunately none, because it's not compatible with Fx 4.

My bookmarks, passwords and history are still there, so I'm pretty sure.
I don't know which preferences to check, since Firefox seems to sync some of them but not all, privacy settings (not saving forms for example) have been synced properly.

Timeline: installed noscript, NO restart, set up sync, first sync, restart.
