NS menu won't disappear after allowing a script

Post by Trav » Sat Apr 04, 2009 2:16 am

When allowing or blocking a script (on any page), the NS menu (lower right hand corner of FF 3.0.8- OSX 10.5.6) won't disappear.

I remember the older versions of NS would hide the menu once you allowed or blocked a script. Now you have to click outside the menu (somewhere on the webpage) to get the menu to hide.

Is this a bug, or is this built in behavior that allows you to block/allow multiple scripts w/o having to click the NS logo each time?

Unfortunately no MAC here for me to try and replicate this problem exactly but using 3.0.8 and the latest NS on multiple systems including Linux, does not have this issue. When you click on an option to allow, mark as untrusted or forbid, it executes the action and goes away. So we need to see what changed on your system that is causing this or if something is interfering. Can you provide answers to the following please:

Q: Have you recently installed a new theme?
---> If so, does it work when you revert to the default theme?
---> If not, did the theme you are currently using just update?

It's by design

If you prefer to have the menu auto-hide after an allow, then use right-click instead of left (or Ctrl-click if you're a single button user)

Thank you Charley, I assumed the user did a right-click as it was not made clear but no excuse I should have guessed. Glad you caught that, thank you.

No worries mate.
That "Sticky Menu" seems to confuse a lot of the rusted-on users who started with the extension when only the auto-hiding one was offered.
Me? I'm new to NS only this year.

BTW is that whole USMC id a joke? Or propaganda?

It wasn't that, I just use the right-click myself and have done it so long that I have become too accustomed to it and forget the left-click option. Anyway, thanks for catching that and I'll remember to consider that next time, even though I don't use that myself.

No, the USMC id is not a joke. I am a honorably discharged Marine who served for 7 years and had to take a medical in 2000. Why propaganda? seems a little harsh to dismiss a point of pride for someone like that don't you think? Anyhow, thanks for your help.

Isn't there a third option? Personal pride in who and what you are?

It wasn't you I was singling out mate. Like I said, the Sticky Menu doesn't seem to be a feature used by a lot of users who started using NS when it only had the auto-hide menu. Not just you, but a lot seem to forget it's there if they don't use it - which is what I said. Trying to make you feel more at ease, because I thought you were being hard on yourself by writing an explanation post for such a small oversight.

It wasn't a frivolous question. I'm interested in the way things get viral on the internet and there seem to be heaps more US army ids in forums I belong to. Most are just fun. I like to know if I'm dealing with a real paid rootin tootin paid killr ;-))
Here in Australia, The ADF is constitutionally under direct control of the Minister for Defence of the current government.
In that position, like for any other public servant, a defence force member isn't allowed to appropriate any part of their insignia to use in any way separate from their employment. They have to follow orders completely, and not interpret them for themselves. Even if they are paid to kill people :-)
My dad is a member of the ADF and isn't even permitted to have a car sticker with his regimental id. All he gets is a parking sticker for his battallion office. He would get shirty if he saw someone using ADF insignia without permission.
Not that he would want to advertise his profession. That would be asking for trouble around here.

Compared to us, your US way of soldiering propaganda - - that includes advertising your pride in yourself - - looks like Hollywood :-)
No harshin on you mate.
Just sayin.
I'm a muso. Paid to wield an axe. Bass.

Anyhow, that's me for the chat for the day.
Nice to get to know you :-)

I know what you meant and thank you. I did feel a bit better but still it was a rookie mistake to overlook it and I had to own it.

I like to think we did more than that ;) but jokes aside, the motto always was "we are in the business of killing and business is good", not a point of pride or anything just a dumb observation I guess. Its silly but when you are young, sometimes you do things you are not proud of later in life or in the case of soldiers, say things you are not proud of or mean. I was a sniper, so as you know our kills are pretty much a matter of record and fact, so I guess we carry a bit more sensitivity to the question "have you ever killed anyone" than the regular infantry who may or may not have killed someone in a spray of bullets. Know what I mean?

For me it is not so much as advertising it or bragging or anything like that, its a show of pride and respect to all the men I served with, all the ones who died next to me, all those who followed orders to defend (right or wrong of it another matter all together), all those who came before and all those who will come in the future. I still have my boot camp shirts with the black letter USMC on the front and I keep it in my closet and ironically the one who wears it is my wife and I have not taken my uniform out except for funerals of the fallen. I think we handle military service and pride for it slightly differently here, so unless its an inter-branch squabble or rivalry, it generally doesn't constitute a controversy. But I do thank you for bringing that up and sharing it with me, now I know something I didn't know before :)

For all purposes we are just paid to do it and follow orders that we don't always agree with and its not propaganda, although I should say not for me at least, in fact other than telling people that I am a Marine, I can't even discuss with I did, so trust me if it was for glory, it was the wrong position because we got none. You'd be surprised how immaterial, replaceable and disposable we really are to the powers to be. The pride of service is simply an individual choice, although I am sure some do it because of pressure or for attention, not all. I don't mind anyone harshin my buzz  as long as they don't do it for the sake of just being mean and being inconsiderate, we are all just a pawn in someone else's game anyway, whether its government or the universe.

It was good chatting with you too and hope now that you know me better now and can give me the benefit of the doubt that I am truly an honorable person waiting his turn to check out off this wonderful planet of ours. If you ever need a mate for a tall cold one or someone to have you back wielding an axe, just give me a shout. Cheers. :P

I appreciate that, and I'm glad you guys worked it out. But the post in question left only two options: joke or propaganda, vs. a simple question, say, "Are you truly a US Marine, as your avatar implies?" That's why I replied as I did.

Again, glad you guys got together, and pls keep in mind it's the politicians who give the orders and the soldiers who obey them (without which, you blokes might be speaking Japanese today :D ) Cheers Mate, and have a cold one on me. -- TT.
