"Blue screen" on loading Firefox

Post by jameshutton »

I've been a happy user of NoScript (in Firefox) for a few months now, but since yesterday I can't open Firefox anymore without getting a NoScript error. Not an error message though: instead of an empty Firefox tab opening, I get a screen with a blue shaded background that I recognize from NoScript pop-ups, with the NoScript logo (blue S with eyes and teeth) in the top right corner, and two checkboxes in the middle of the screen (a round and a square one) as well as an "OK" and "cancel" button near the bottom. I can check and uncheck the square box, only check (not uncheck) the round box, while tapping the "OK" and "cancel" buttons doesn't do anything.

Any idea what's going on? Should I re-install Firefox and NoScript or is there anything else I can do before I do that?

Since my previous post doesn't show the screenshot I uploaded, let's try again:

What version of FF?
What version of NoScript?

What is that screen we're looking at?

Any change if you disable all extensions except for NoScript?

This is the screen that I get when I open Firefox. Since I can't access anything, I can't check versions of FF or NoScript. But I have those on auto-update so they should be the latest versions. I can't disable any extensions, all the option buttons and extension icons I normally see in the topright corner of FF are gone/not visible.

The screen reminds me of a NoScript pop-up screen I got when it warned me of some script trying to pass data (phone number I entered into a field) to another website.

Hovering over Firefox.exe gave me the file version: 62.0.3.6848

To further clarify: I'm accessing this forum through Internet Explorer, since I can't use Firefox.

Start FF in Safe Mode & see what that does.

What page(s) do you have Firefox set to load on startup?
*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

Thank you, that's what I needed. I have it on "restore previous session", and I guess my previous sessions where just NoScript pop-ups (probably having closed the browser before closing the pop-ups).

So now while in Safe Mode -- which got me the same pop-up screen but without the blue NoScript background and logo, since extensions are disabled in Safe Mode -- I hit Ctrl+N for New Tab, and voila! A new tab appears in a new window like I'd expect.

I'm not sure if I tried hitting Ctrl+N for New Tab while in 'normal' mode yesterday, so can't comment on if that'd have worked as well.

Thanks for your help!
